“Argo Blockchain hired a finance chief from a mobile games company the same week it reported a 10 percent drop in Bitcoin mined. Does an outsider's finance background fix a mining production problem?”

Argo Blockchain named Jim MacCallum chief financial officer on April 4, 2023, with his first day set for April 51. The appointment landed in the same SEC filing as Argo's March operational update. That update reported 161 Bitcoin mined in March, a 10 percent drop in daily production from February.

      The move

MacCallum came from East Side Games Group, a publicly traded mobile game company based in Canada, where he had served as chief financial officer1. Before that he was senior vice president of finance and acting CFO at Westport Fuel Systems, a clean transportation company. He earlier held finance roles at Amica Mature Lifestyles, Absolute Software and Cisco Systems. MacCallum is a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst with more than 30 years in finance and accounting roles.

Seif El-Bakly, Argo's interim chief executive at the time, said in the filing, “With over 30 years of experience, Jim brings a wealth of finance and accounting knowledge to Argo, and I am excited for him to drive our financial discipline as we seek to deliver long-term value to our shareholders”1. MacCallum answered in the same release, “I am delighted to be joining Argo Blockchain, a dynamic and innovative company with a rich history and exciting future. I look forward to contributing to the success of the Company through a strong focus on financial discipline”. Finance Magnates reported the appointment on April 4, 2023, under the headline naming both the hire and the mining decline2.

      Argo before and after

Argo's March production slide followed a 10 percent rise in network difficulty compared with February, the filing said1. Mining revenue still climbed to $4.05 million in March 2023 from $3.76 million in February, because Bitcoin's dollar price rose that month even as the company mined less of it. Argo held 85 Bitcoin on its balance sheet as of March 31, 2023. Its hashrate held at 2.5 EH/s.

Matthew Shaw, chairman of the board, framed the hire around Argo's next phase rather than the month's numbers. “His broad experience across multiple industries and strategic mindset will help guide the Company through its next phase of growth,” he said of MacCallum1.

      What came next

MacCallum moved up the ladder at Argo within two years of taking the CFO seat. Chief executive Thomas Chippas announced he was stepping down effective February 28, 2025. Argo's board named MacCallum, "current Chief Financial Officer," as interim chief executive while it searched for a permanent successor3. The same filing carried MacCallum's own signature as CFO. He still held the finance role the moment he also took on the top job.
