CoinPaprika Finds a Sevenfold Gap in Bitcoin's Volume

A single day's trading data put Bitcoin's reported volume nearly seven times above the market's real turnover, raising doubts about September's record rebound.

“Crypto's spot exchanges posted $696.7 billion in trades in September, a 36.5 percent jump that gave Binance 42.7 percent of the whole quarter. Does that number prove traders are flocking back to crypto's biggest exchange?”

Crypto's spot exchanges posted $696.7 billion in trades during September, Crypto Briefing reported on Oct. 132. That is a 36.5 percent jump from August, and every major exchange grew. Binance alone took $307.8 billion of it, 44.2 percent of the month. OKX came a distant second at 9.5 percent, and Coinbase was third at 8.8 percent.

Over the whole third quarter, Binance's share reached 42.7 percent1. CoinGecko found that was the only double-digit figure in the top ten.

Read plainly, the number says traders trust Binance more than any rival. Every major exchange grew that September, and money picked the deepest pool. That easy story skips a test. One data firm ran it on a single day inside that same September.

Bartek Hagan, the CoinPaprika analyst who ran the check, compared Bitcoin's reported volume on Sept. 10 against the real turnover of the whole crypto market that day3. Exchanges claimed $1.26 trillion in Bitcoin trades alone, or $1,260 billion. The entire market, every coin included, turned over $182.9 billion. One asset reported trading at a 6.9-to-1 ratio against the whole market's real turnover.

Sixty-seven markets held 95.3 percent of every dollar Bitcoin claimed on Sept. 103. That is a slice of the roughly 2,370 markets Hagan tracked. He flagged those markets for trades that repeated in close, mechanical patterns.

The ratio lines up with history. Bitwise Asset Management told the SEC something similar back in 20193. Fake trades made up 95 percent of reported spot Bitcoin volume then, the firm found.

Binance runs the exchange at the center of the number. Richard Teng, its co-CEO, told Fortune on Oct. 13 that Binance is pushing into tokenized stocks because its users want exposure past crypto alone6. A bigger reported share gives that pitch more weight with the regulators Binance is courting.

Federal prosecutors named specific people behind part of the wash-trading problem in April. The Department of Justice charged ten people tied to the firms Gotbit, Vortex, Antier and Contrarian4. Prosecutors said the group faked trading activity to pump token prices. Stefan Muehlbauer, head of U.S. government affairs at CertiK, said the case proves the practice continues. “Despite increased enforcement, wash trading continues to be a pervasive issue, particularly among lower-cap tokens and on unregulated exchanges,” Muehlbauer said.

Some numbers behind the quarter's rebound passed a second check. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $2.65 billion in September, their second-largest month since October 2025, The Block reported on Oct. 25. Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, read the inflows as proof buyers are serious. “With the Q4 bottom seemingly established, continued ETF inflows also signal improving market sentiment and a potentially more bullish setup heading into the final quarter,” John said.

John's case and Muehlbauer's case point at two different parts of the same number. An ETF settles through a regulated custodian. The fund clears through the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq, so a dollar counted there mostly moved for real5. A dollar counted on an offshore spot exchange carries that promise far less often.

The question under every exchange ranking is who the number serves. A trader who picks a venue because it tops the charts pays fees on trading size the venue may have invented. An exchange that reports its real figures finishes behind one that inflates its own.

That exchange loses the business a true ranking would have sent its way. The market pays last. A thin order book moves further than a thick one on the same trade, and the printed volume overstated the book's real depth.

September's rebound was part real and part invented. The rankings on your screen blend both into a single number. CoinGecko's own top ten still runs on exchanges reporting their own trades, the same kind of reporting Hagan's Sept. 10 check caught badly overstated [1, 3]. Binance's scale may be genuine. The specific number used to prove it still needs a second source before any reader should trust it whole.

Both sides, in their own words

Does that number prove traders are flocking back to crypto's biggest exchange?
