“Copper, a digital asset custody firm, named John Meserve, a former Bank of New York executive with more than four decades in custody and corporate trust, to its board on April 10, 2026. Does banking infrastructure experience carry over to oversight of blockchain-based collateral?”

Copper named John Meserve a director on April 10, 2026. He succeeds Jim Turley on the board of the digital asset custody firm1. Meserve spent more than four decades in banking infrastructure, corporate trust and custody. He held senior leadership roles at The Bank of New York, Copper's release said. Based in the United States, Meserve will back Copper's work with regulators, investors and institutional clients. He will also help strengthen the audit, risk and compliance functions, the company said.

      The move

Meserve laid out the task ahead in his own words. “As institutional adoption gathers pace, the focus must be on building resilient, scalable market infrastructure that institutions can rely on. Copper has taken a disciplined approach to building institutional-grade infrastructure and I look forward to supporting its continued expansion in the US,” Meserve said1. Turley, the outgoing chair of Copper's audit, risk and compliance committee, praised the groundwork he leaves behind. “I am proud of the resilient and robust controls that we have implemented at Copper over the last three years, setting standards for the institutional custody and collateral mobility of blockchain-based assets,” Turley said. He added that he was “happy that Copper will continue to build on this strong foundation with John Meserve's leadership of the ARC Committee”.

      Before and after Meserve

Turley's statement on April 10, 2026 covered the controls Copper built over the three years before it1. On April 10, 2026, Copper also named former Flow Traders chief executive Mike Kuehnel chairman, succeeding Lord Hammond, in changes the company tied to its pursuit of regulated status in the United States. Copper chief executive Amar Kuchinad credited Meserve's background directly. He said Meserve's “experience at BNY and relationships with many traditional financial market infrastructure providers will also be invaluable to Copper”.

      What to watch

Copper's board still carried Meserve's name on September 27, 2026, when the company named Elin Cherry and Sam Goh co-chief executives and moved Amar Kuchinad to an advisory role3. The next test is whether Copper wins the regulated status in the United States that its April 10, 2026 release said it was pursuing1.
