Crypto's Big Names Tease Plans, Skip the Details

A bank, a founder and a stablecoin chief all teased big crypto news, and all left out the hard numbers.

“Three of crypto's most watched executives each needed one post this week for their biggest news, and each post skipped the number a reader could check. Deutsche Bank's own plan names 5 assets for its custody launch; the bank has confirmed 2 of them so far. Does a tease that skips its own numbers deserve the same trust as a launch with a receipt?”

Three of crypto's best known executives each said big news was coming this week. Each used a single post to say it. Deutsche Bank's Gerald Podobnik told Reuters in Bangkok that bitcoin and ether custody for German clients is weeks away1. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson called an unfinished idea his career's biggest work5. Tether's Paolo Ardoino kept pointing at a gold token while the metal hit record prices10. Each tease skipped one thing: a number the reader could check against tomorrow's headline.

A Bank Teases a Launch, Then Narrows the List

Gerald Podobnik co-leads Deutsche Bank's corporate bank. He spoke with Reuters on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok on Oct. 16, 20261. His message was simple. Germany's biggest bank will hold bitcoin and ether for corporate clients within weeks2.

Podobnik put it plainly to Reuters. “I believe that, as the financial system, we will need to offer tokenised or blockchain solutions to our clients as additional services alongside our traditional ones ... but not necessarily to replace what we are doing today,” he said3.

Coinpedia and Cryptonomist both read Podobnik's Bangkok comments the same way12. Two assets launch first: bitcoin and ether. Three stablecoins follow later: USDC, EURC and EURAU. One roundup that circulated the week of Oct. 16, 2026, counted five assets as live at launch. The sources behind that count list two for launch, and five across Deutsche Bank's full plan4.

Crypto.news found the open questions the announcement left standing: a fee schedule, an exact date, and which clients can sign up first4. Deutsche Bank's own product page conditions the launch on "regulatory completion and technical readiness," language that leaves the calendar open.

The bank built the service with Taurus, a Swiss digital-asset technology firm1. Deutsche Bank led a $65 million funding round for Taurus in 2023, well before any custody product existed. The Asia expansion stays just as light on detail. Podobnik named 2027, with zero city or license named yet.

Both sides, in their own words

A Founder Calls an Unfinished Idea His Best Work

Hoskinson founded Cardano and still runs Input Output, its development arm6. On Oct. 17, 2026, he posted about a concept tied to Midnight, Cardano's privacy-focused sister chain5. Midnight lets apps hide sensitive data while still meeting regulatory checks. He used three sentences and his highest praise. “I'm working on a concept that only midnight can bring to the cryptocurrency space that solves most of the problems. Almost have all of it designed conceptually. It's the magnum opus of my career,” Hoskinson wrote on X.

He left the feature, the partner and the date for later5. CaptainAltcoin, which covered the post on Oct. 17, 2026, read it as a tease still waiting on a real announcement. TokenPost reported the same post the next morning, and found the same gap: a concept nearing completion, with its scope still unclear6.

Midnight already carries a live dispute over who controls it. Justin Bons, who runs the crypto fund Cyber Capital, raised that dispute on Sept. 29, 20267. Hoskinson answered him the same day, saying Midnight "is not closed source". Hoskinson's magnum-opus post left both claims standing.

Cardano's own roadmap sits beside this tease. Hoskinson says the chain reaches its original 2015 design once Leios ships6. Leios itself stays in public testing, with a mainnet target before the end of 2026. Midnight sits as a later chapter, after that work finishes.

A Stablecoin Chief Makes a Big Claim, Short on Numbers

Ardoino runs Tether, the company behind the biggest stablecoin on the market10. He also runs its gold arm, Tether Gold, a token backed by physical bars stored in Switzerland8. Each XAU₮ equals one troy ounce of gold9.

The Block reported in January that Tether expects to become one of the largest gold central banks in the world10. Ardoino gave Bloomberg that line. The claim arrived loose. Its size, and the date for reaching it, stayed open.

Tether's own language matches that pattern. “Tether Gold proves that real-world assets can thrive on-chain without compromise. With gold prices at all-time highs and institutional interest in tokenized assets growing, XAU₮ represents the future of asset ownership, where physical security meets digital freedom,” Ardoino said in a company statement8.

Gold itself keeps setting records. XAU₮ traded at $4,141.91 on Oct. 18, 2026, Trust Wallet's live price page showed9. Tether's own balance sheet carries a separate gold position, apart from XAU₮'s backing. That position topped 140 tons earlier this year, worth more than $23 billion at the time, The Block reported10. XAU₮'s own backing stood at roughly 11.6 tons the last time Tether published the figure, in its Oct. 28, 2025 release8.

The Case for a Tease, and the Case Against One

Podobnik's own words make the case for patience3. Deutsche Bank adds blockchain services beside its existing business, one piece at a time. A phased rollout gives regulators and clients a working product to test. Bundling every feature into one promise gives them a date and little else.

Justin Bons runs the crypto fund Cyber Capital. He raised the harder questions about Midnight on Sept. 29, 2026, weeks before Hoskinson's new tease. “Midnight validators switched to closed-source code on September 25 without notifying the public,” Bons wrote, pointing at two entities that together hold roughly half of Midnight's token supply7. Hoskinson denied the claim and pointed to programs built to spread that supply out. The new magnum-opus post left both accounts unresolved5.

Visa supplied the week's counterexample. On Oct. 15, 2026, Visa Direct moved its USDC-funded payouts into commercial production with a named partner, Inyo Global, across more than 180 countries11. Inyo Global's co-founder Robson Dantas named the mechanism outright. “By integrating Visa Direct's stablecoin-enabled prefunding into the Inyo platform, we're giving the money transmitters, fintechs and payment companies we serve a new way to fund their payouts, one that is available around the clock and runs through the same Inyo APIs they already use,” he said.

Visa's own volume backs up the scale. The Block reported that settlement through the network hit a $20 billion annualized run rate in September12. That pace ran more than 15 times its year-earlier level. A bank, a founder and a stablecoin chief each chose a shorter message this week. Visa chose the longer one, with the receipts attached. A reader tracking any of the three can act on Visa's numbers today. Each of the other two still waits on a page to catch up to its post.

      • Two: the assets confirmed for Deutsche Bank's custody launch, bitcoin and ether, Podobnik told Reuters on Oct. 16, 202612.
      • Five: the assets named in the bank's full custody plan, once stablecoin conversion arrives2.
      • $81,497: bitcoin's price on CoinGecko, as of Oct. 18, 2026, 22:17 UTC13.
      • $2,385.13: ether's price on CoinGecko, at the same time14.
      • $4,141.91: Tether Gold's price on Trust Wallet, as of Oct. 18, 20269.
      • 140 tons: Tether's physical gold reserves, reported by The Block in January 202610.
      • 180: the countries Visa Direct's USDC payouts reached starting Oct. 15, 202611.
      • $20 billion: Visa's annualized stablecoin settlement run rate in September 2026, up more than 15-fold from a year earlier12.

      What to watch

Watch Deutsche Bank's own custody page for a fee schedule and a firm date. Both facts are still missing from its current listing4. Hoskinson's next test is a partner's name or a ship date for Midnight, the detail his magnum-opus post left for later5. Tether's next reserve attestation would show the exact share gold now holds in its business, turning "central bank" talk into an audited number10.
