The move
Holmes framed the appointment as a plan reaching its planned end. “Mr. Kilic was onboarded in the summer of 2021 as President & Chief Operating Officer of HIVE with the vision to replace me as the Interim Chief Executive Officer to be the full time Chief Executive Officer,” Holmes said in HIVE's release1. He credited Kilic's run as COO, from summer 2021 to January 2023, with record results. “In the last 18 months he guided the Company with achieving its own record-breaking revenues, record returns on invested capital, enviable operational growth in terms of equipment purchases and new infrastructure build-outs and deployments in Sweden and New Brunswick,” Holmes said. Kilic answered by naming Holmes as a mentor. “Frank Holmes is a great mentor with invaluable experience and a highly respected innovative track record in the global capital markets, and I am grateful for the opportunity that Frank and the HIVE Board of Directors has provided me,” Kilic said.
Before and after at HIVE
Kilic had spent 18 months as HIVE's president and chief operating officer before the promotion, a role the release said he took on in the summer of 20211. Under his operational leadership, HIVE's Bitcoin mining hashrate grew more than 200%, from 700 petahash per second in the summer of 2021 to 2.4 exahash in November 2022. HIVE's release said the company mined the equivalent of 4,572 Bitcoin during the 2022 calendar year. That marked a 13% increase over the 4,032 Bitcoin HIVE mined in 2021, a year in which Bitcoin's network difficulty rose 46%. Holmes kept a role in the company's direction after the handoff. He described his continuing job as “providing a macro-strategic outlook to HIVE through my position as Executive Chairman”. Kilic's new mandate covered reporting to Holmes while overseeing “the tactical execution of the Company's global strategies, business development initiatives and engagement with the capital markets,” the release said.
What came next
By April 24, 2025, more than two years after the handoff, Kilic still held the title. HIVE's own site reported on April 24, 2025, that "President & CEO Aydin Kilic" joined a panel titled "How Web3 Will Influence the Future of AI" at Paris Blockchain Week3. By then the company had renamed itself from HIVE Blockchain Technologies to HIVE Digital Technologies, the same site shows. Kilic, the successor Holmes described in January 2023, had held the chief executive seat for at least 27 months by April 24, 2025.
