Electric Coin Company's parent board announced on December 18, 2023, that Josh Swihart would take over as chief executive, replacing Zooko Wilcox, who had led the firm since 20151. Swihart had served as the company's senior vice president of growth. He returned for the top job, the board's blog post said. Blockchain.News confirmed the handover on December 20, 2023. The outlet said Wilcox's identity had become "overly conflated" with Zcash itself2.

The move
Bootstrap, Electric Coin Company's parent entity, wrote the announcement in its own voice. “Josh Swihart, formerly SVP of Growth at ECC, will return to ECC and take over the reins from Zooko as CEO. He will be responsible for all strategic and tactical decisions,” the board wrote1. Five board members signed the post: Alan Fairless, Christina Garman, Michelle Lai, Zooko Wilcox and Zaki Manian. Wilcox kept a seat on the Bootstrap board, the board said.
Why hand the company to someone who had already left once? The board pointed to Swihart's prior run at Electric Coin Company and a specific set of gaps it wanted closed. Blockchain.News reported that Swihart's mandate centered on “finding product-market fit, unlocking new partnerships and collaboration, improving Zcash usability, and increasing adoption”2.
Electric Coin Company before and after
Wilcox had overseen some of Zcash's defining technical milestones during his tenure, the board's post said. The post credited him with the first real-world use of zero-knowledge proofs in a live cryptocurrency, plus the Sapling upgrade that brought shielded transactions to mobile wallets1. Swihart inherited a company entering a new phase. His mandate, in the board's words, was “finding product-market fit, unlocking new partnerships and collaboration, improving Zcash usability, and increasing adoption”. Blockchain.News reported Swihart brought "nearly five years" at the company into the new role2.
What came next
Two years into Swihart's tenure, the entire Electric Coin Company staff resigned on January 7, 2026. The Block reported a dispute with the same Bootstrap board that had installed him caused the exit3. Swihart called it a "constructive discharge," naming four board members as misaligned with Zcash's mission: Zaki Manian, Christina Garman, Alan Fairless and Michelle Lai. “Yesterday, the entire ECC team left after being constructively discharged by ZCAM. In short, the terms of our employment were changed in ways that made it impossible for us to perform our duties effectively and with integrity,” Swihart wrote on X, as The Block reported. Swihart said the departing team planned to form a new company to continue Zcash development. The Zcash protocol itself stayed unaffected by the personnel change, according to The Block.
