Musk's Flying Car Sends Crypto Traders Into Overdrive

A car that flies moved more crypto money than any blockchain news did Friday.

“A flying car beat every blockchain headline of the week, in dollars moved. Hyperliquid's hourly bet on Tesla jumped from $2.8 million to $47 million in the hour after Elon Musk posted his flying Roadster clip. Does a car that flies deserve to move more crypto money than real crypto news?”

Elon Musk posted a 15-second clip at 01:57 UTC on Oct. 16, 2026. It showed Tesla's new Roadster lifting off the ground on SpaceX thrusters. Traders moved fast. Hyperliquid's contract that tracks Tesla's stock price jumped in hourly volume by 1,580 percent, CoinDesk reported. The total went from $2.8 million to $47 million in a single hour1. Nasdaq sat closed for the night.

A Perpetual Contract Built to Watch One Stock

Hyperliquid runs as a decentralized exchange built for leveraged bets. One of its listings, built by a partner called Trade.xyz, tracks Tesla's stock price. It settles trades in USDC, crypto's dollar-pegged token. A trader opens one with a crypto wallet alone, bypassing the brokerage account1.

Leverage sits at up to 20 times a trader's own money. A $1,000 deposit can open a $20,000 position. Leverage multiplies gains. It multiplies losses just as fast1.

Tesla closed regular trading at $362.44 on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026. Hyperliquid's own contract kept trading through the night. By 13:00 UTC on Oct. 16, it priced Tesla near $378, a jump tied only to Musk's clip and the thrusters it showed1. Tesla's actual shares rose about 4.5 percent once premarket trading opened Friday, catching up to where crypto had already priced the stock.

The Busiest Hour in a Year

Hyperliquid's Tesla contract hit one of its busiest stretches since launch. CoinDesk counted it as the contract's second-busiest day in the roughly one year since it opened. Its daily tally was still climbing nine hours in when CoinDesk filed its report1.

Open interest reached $99 million on Hyperliquid by early Friday. That number counts every bet still open on the contract. Binance carried more raw volume on its own Tesla-linked contract, $279 million over 24 hours, by RootData's count in CoinDesk's report. Hyperliquid still held the larger stack of open bets1.

The volume moved a contract that tracks Tesla's price. Actual Tesla shares stayed on Nasdaq's own clock. Nasdaq stayed shut from 16:00 Thursday to 09:30 Friday, Eastern time. For 17 and a half hours, a leveraged crypto contract carried the only live price anyone could trade against Musk's news1.

"No Commercial Value," One Investor Says

Gene Munster watched the same clip and reached a colder verdict. He manages Deepwater Asset Management, a fund that holds Tesla stock, and posted his read within minutes of the demo8.

“It was an engineering flex with no commercial value beyond embarrassing traditional car makers,” Munster wrote on X at 01:32 UTC on Oct. 16, 20268. He added a second point: Musk wants Tesla and SpaceX merged in the public's mind, Munster argued.

Munster's fund still rates Tesla a buy. His quarrel sits with the demo itself. A contract that moved $47 million in an hour, by his read, priced a stunt that carried zero commercial weight8. Deepwater has tracked Tesla's quarterly numbers for years. Munster judged the Roadster by that same yardstick: a car business, apart from the thruster show.

The Case for a Market That Stays Open

Trade.xyz lists the Tesla contract on Hyperliquid. It made its case for this kind of trading back in July. The company wrote on X that its data now streams into TradingView, the chart platform professional traders use. More than 100 markets run through Trade.xyz today, spanning equities, commodities and pre-IPO names, by the company's own count9.

“Markets are increasingly shaped by events unfolding around the clock, and price discovery shouldn't stop when traditional venues close,” Trade.xyz posted on X on July 2, 20269. Friday's spike reads as that argument playing out in real time. Musk posted his clip at 01:57 UTC. Nasdaq opened at 13:30 UTC, about eleven and a half hours later1.

A trader who believed the clip meant something for Tesla had exactly one market open to test that belief before sunrise. Hyperliquid carried every dollar of that belief until Nasdaq's bell rang1. Trade.xyz's own argument treats that overnight price as real information, worth acting on before morning9.

The Blockchain News That Moved Less Money

Three real crypto stories broke the same week. Crypto's trading desks shrugged at each one, judged by the dollars and the clicks each one drew.

The Solana Foundation watched its own Shanghai conference stall before it opened. Chinese police stationed officers outside the Shangri-La Hotel on Oct. 16. Organizers held the doors for about 90 minutes4. Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao asked a pointed question about the delay on X. He pointed to a similar stoppage in Shenzhen a year earlier.

Solana Foundation President Lily Liu gave her own account hours later. Registrations had "quadrupled overnight," Liu wrote. They topped the cap local authorities had approved5. Three more stops on the tour, in Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing, still sat unconfirmed. Crypto's own prices barely moved on the news.

MSCI delivered a bigger number the same day. The index provider approved new rules on Oct. 16. They could drop Strategy and Metaplanet from its stock indexes6. MSCI will name the affected companies on Nov. 11, 2026, with the new rules taking hold on Nov. 30. JPMorgan estimated the change could force $2.8 billion out of Strategy's shares. Strategy's chairman, Michael Saylor, waved the threat off in a Bloomberg interview three days earlier3. He called MSCI's proposed rule biased against companies that hold digital assets. Strategy's stock closed Thursday at $151.29. That sits far under its $543 peak from November 2024. Its move traced to the filing's own timetable. A flying car clip played zero part in it.

A third story carried an actual theft. Chainalysis reported Thursday that a job-scam operator lost more than $4.9 million in bitcoin7. Thieves took it through three Ledger wallets. Hidden chips in those devices leaked recovery data over a mobile network. CryptoBilis, a reseller in Southeast Asia, sold the affected hardware, CoinDesk reported. That sum, stolen from a scammer by other thieves, still fell short of what Hyperliquid's Tesla contract moved in one hour1.

Attention told the same story. Musk's clip drew 737,418 likes and 38,175 replies by 02:00 UTC on Oct. 17, 2026, by X's own count2. Zhao's post on the Solana stoppage drew 1,657 likes in the same window10. Liu's drew 1,01011. A flying car out-drew the week's real news by a wide margin.

      By the numbers

      • $47 million: Hyperliquid's hourly Tesla contract volume at 13:00 UTC on Oct. 16, 2026, up from $2.8 million the hour before Musk's post, CoinDesk reported1.
      • 1,580 percent: the jump in that hourly volume, CoinDesk's count showed1.
      • 20 times: the leverage Hyperliquid allows on its Tesla contract, open through a crypto wallet alone1.
      • 737,418 likes: the count on Musk's post as of 02:00 UTC on Oct. 17, 2026, by X's own tally2.
      • $4.9 million: the bitcoin a job-scam operator lost to thieves who drained three Ledger wallets, Chainalysis told CoinDesk7.
      • $2.8 billion: JPMorgan's estimate of the passive-fund outflow Strategy could face if MSCI drops it from an index6.
      • 90 minutes: how long Solana Foundation's Shanghai attendees waited outside a blocked hotel door, crypto.news reported4.

      What to watch

Tesla reports third-quarter earnings on Oct. 21, 2026, the next moment stock and crypto markets will price the same company at once. A second thruster demo, if Musk posts one, will show whether Friday's volume was a one-time spike or a pattern. Watch Hyperliquid's open interest on the Tesla contract. A number that keeps climbing past $99 million would back Trade.xyz's case for markets that trade around the clock.
