The handoff
nChain Group's release listed Nguyen's prior titles. He had served as chief business officer, and before that as chief intellectual property, communications and legal officer1. BlockTribune ran its own report on December 5, 2017. The outlet called nChain "a research and development firm for blockchain technologies" and confirmed Matthews moved to chairman2.
Matthews explained the timing of the handoff inside the release he and Nguyen both signed onto. “The nChain Group's business activities are rapidly expanding, making this the perfect time for Jimmy to assume leadership of our global organization while I continue providing strategic oversight as Board Chairman,” Matthews said1. Nguyen answered in kind. “The 'n' in nChain stands for infinite. The possibilities for Bitcoin and blockchain technologies are truly infinite, and I am honored to lead the nChain Group on its journey to enable infinite innovation through Bitcoin Cash,” Nguyen said.
nChain before and after
Nguyen spent 21 years as a lawyer before nChain. He was most recently a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, according to the release1. nChain Group ran four units. Blockchain research sat inside nChain Limited, intellectual property inside nChain Holdings Limited, and investments inside nChain Reaction. A fourth unit, nCrypt, ran a Bitcoin wallet and exchange in Canada due to rebrand as nTrust in early 2018. More than 60 researchers and engineers worked across London and Vancouver, the release said, and Nguyen would keep traveling worldwide rather than settle at either office.
What came next
Nguyen ran nChain for 15 months. nChain named David Washburn as his successor on March 7, 2019, and said Nguyen would chair its Strategic Advisory Board3. He also became founding president of the Bitcoin Association, a group built to grow Bitcoin SV.
