“Riot Platforms put Jaime Leverton, former chief executive of rival Bitcoin miner Hut 8, on its board on February 12, 2025, in a board change shaped with input from activist investors Starboard Value and D.E. Shaw. Does a rival's former chief executive bring Riot the data center experience it was looking for?”

Riot Platforms appointed Jaime Leverton to its board of directors on Feb. 12, 2025, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission1. Crowdfund Insider's independent report ran on Feb. 14, 2025, and named Leverton's two new board colleagues, Doug Mouton and Michael Turner2. The filing described Leverton as the former chief executive of Hut 8 Mining Corp., where she had led the company's Nasdaq listing.

      The move

Riot's filing framed the three additions around one skill set: converting Bitcoin mining assets toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing1. Benjamin Yi, Riot's executive chairman, named Leverton directly. “Jaime, Doug and Michael bring complementary expertise to the Board that will be immediately applicable as we continue to assess how best to maximize the value of our unique assets,” Yi said. Crowdfund Insider reported that two activist investors, Starboard Value and D.E. Shaw, had given input on the board process2.

Leverton's own record anchored the appointment. At Hut 8, the filing said, she had overseen "extensive M&A and capital markets activities." Those included the company's Nasdaq listing and its push into high-performance computing, through the purchase of TeraGo's data center business1. Before Hut 8, she had served as chief commercial officer at eStruxture Data Centers. Regional roles at Cogeco Peer 1 and BlackBerry came earlier still, the filing added.

      Before and after the appointment

Riot's board grew to six seats with Leverton's arrival. Directors Hannah Cho and Hubert Marleau retired on Feb. 12, 2025, the filing said1. Riot also disclosed new hires for its AI pivot. Its new advisers were the bank Evercore and Northland Capital Markets, hired to weigh AI and HPC deals for its Corsicana, Texas plant. The consultant Altman Solon had already begun a related study. Jason Les, Riot's chief executive, tied the board hires to that broader search for new uses of the company's power assets.

      What came next

Jaime Leverton had become chief executive of ReserveOne, a digital-asset investment firm, by Dec. 30, 2025. CNBC's "Squawk Box" introduced her in that role for a segment on institutional bitcoin adoption in 20263. She had joined Riot's board ten and a half months earlier, on Feb. 12, 20251.
