Tether named Zachary Lyons its chief investment officer on March 12, 2026. Tether's own release said Lyons moved up from deputy chief investment officer as Richard Heathcote stepped into an advisory role1. GuruFocus reported on March 13, 2026 that Lyons would “take over the CIO role and assume responsibility for day-to-day investment management” at the firm behind the $184 billion USDT stablecoin2.

The move
Tether's release tied Lyons's promotion to his record beside Heathcote. “Zachary Lyons, who has worked closely alongside Heathcote as deputy CIO within Tether's investment team and has been deeply involved in evaluating and executing many of the firm's strategic investments, will step into the role of Chief Investment Officer,” the company wrote1. Chief executive Paolo Ardoino named the handover directly. “Zach has worked side by side with Richard and the investment team and has been deeply involved in the strategy we've built together,” Ardoino said. “As we continue building what we believe is a once in a century company, we are excited for Zach to step into this role and help lead the next phase of growth.”
Before and after the promotion
Lyons had been “deeply involved in evaluating and executing many of the firm's strategic investments” as deputy chief investment officer, Tether's release said1. He worked inside the same team Heathcote had led. GuruFocus reported that the investment engine Lyons now runs had grown well beyond Tether's original role as a stablecoin issuer, directing reserve profits into companies across several industries, including a roughly $1.2 billion funding round in the German startup Neura Robotics2. Tether's release said Lyons would “continue leading the company's capital deployment across technologies and infrastructure aligned with Tether's long-term vision”.
What to watch
GuruFocus put Tether's holdings of U.S. Treasury bills at $122 billion at the end of 20252. That number will show whether Lyons keeps the base growing at Heathcote's pace. Tether's own release pointed to its "unblemished redemption record" as the standard Lyons inherits1. That record gets tested the next time USDT faces a large wave of withdrawals.
