“XRP picked up a name on X and more than 4 million views in a day, the same week JPMorgan told Wall Street bitcoin would beat stocks for the next decade. Does one account and one forecast add up to crypto's arrival?”

XRP picked up a name on X Monday, 14 years after its ledger first went live1. The account gained more than 4 million views in a day4. Wall Street moved too. JPMorgan told clients bitcoin would beat stocks and gold over the next decade5. Hyperliquid's policy arm asked regulators to fix five crypto rules7. A hacker moved $61 million toward a mixer that erases its trail9. Microsoft, Alphabet and Goldman Sachs blocked their own shares from trading as tokens11. One token's quiet past met a loud week for the whole industry.

A Decade of Silence Ends in One Post

The XRP Ledger launched in June 2012. Its own page on X stayed empty until Monday14. The account posted one line: "hello, world. It's about time."2. Within an hour it had drawn 260,000 views. By the next day that number topped 4 million. CryptoNinjas counted 21,700 new followers in the first 24 hours3.

Ripple answered fast. Its chief executive, Brad Garlinghouse, wrote on social media that "this one has been a long time coming."4. Monica Long, Ripple's president, called the moment different from most launches. “The best part has been watching people build on something before it was obvious. Welcome @xrp!” she wrote.

The excitement sat beside a plain fact. Crypto.news reported that Ripple and the XRP Ledger Foundation each skipped announcing a product launch or a token move2. The ledger's own rules stayed exactly where they were. An amendment there still needs validators holding more than 80 percent of trust. They must hold that support for two weeks before anything changes. A new account opened that day. Its 14-year-old network kept its old governance intact.

JPMorgan Bets on Bitcoin, Then Hedges Its Own Bet

JPMorgan's asset management arm published its first 10-year forecast for bitcoin Monday. The bank's base case puts bitcoin's annual return at 10 percent over the next decade5. That tops its forecast for stocks at 7.5 percent, real estate trusts at 8.2 percent, and gold at 5.5 percent6. The same report pegs bitcoin's annual volatility at 55 percent, nearly three times stocks or gold.

Matt Hougan, Bitwise's chief investment officer, read the moment as vindication. He posted that critics of bitcoin tend to follow one script: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight at you, then they add you to their Long-Term Capital Markets Assumptions.”6.

JPMorgan's own analysts were less sure. Sheena Shah and Dennis Cristallo wrote in the report that “the volatility and unstable correlation of assets like bitcoin remain an obstacle to their widespread inclusion in portfolios.”5. The bank left bitcoin out of the core models it uses to build client portfolios. A forecast that predicts bitcoin beating every other asset still carries a warning label from the people who wrote it.

Hyperliquid Asks Washington for Five Fixes

Regulators set Oct. 20 as the deadline for public comment on a new rule covering crypto trading8. Hyperliquid Policy Center filed five requests before that clock ran out7.

The group wants airdrops that ask for zero payment kept out of securities law7. It also wants wallet connections and sanctions checks left out of that test. Second, it wants tokens that exited securities status to trade freely through any platform willing to list them. Third, it wants builders protected from a prior sale counting against them forever. Fourth, it wants automated buybacks treated differently from discretionary ones. Fifth, it wants federal rules to override conflicting state registration demands once a project clears its safe harbor. Every one of the five draws a boundary. Each asks for a line written down instead of guessed at.

A Hacker Launders Millions While Big Names Block Tokenized Shares

Six months of patient work preceded the theft. A North Korean group built a fake trading firm. It met Drift's own contributors at industry conferences. The group deposited more than $1 million of real capital before draining the protocol on April 110. That haul came to $270 million. Mandiant later tied the operation to a cluster it tracks as UNC68629.

That money sat still for months. Then, over two hours Tuesday, the attacker moved 25,700 Ether, worth about $61 million, into Tornado Cash9. Blockchain tracker Arkham found roughly $194 million still sitting in the exploiter's wallets after that move. Tornado Cash erases the trail money leaves behind. 24/7 Wall St. found that money crossing into a mixer dodges every standard recovery path10. That path runs through four tools: a stablecoin freeze, an exchange block, a law enforcement seizure, or a negotiated return. Ether carries zero central issuer able to freeze it. The mixer also breaks the link between what goes in and what comes out.

Traditional finance drew its own line the same week. Sixteen companies now object to having their shares traded as tokens on OKX-ICE, a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange11. That list grew from nine objectors on Oct. 15 to sixteen by Oct. 19. New names include Microsoft, Alphabet, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Caterpillar, McDonald's and Western Digital.

Andrew Cuomo, OKX-ICE's co-chairman, called the pushback expected rather than alarming. “We always anticipated that, because this is such a dramatic and revolutionary change, many companies would want to wait and see how it goes rather than be the first to participate,” he said12. The regulatory exemption behind the venue lets any issuer block its own tokenized shares11. Its clock on those objections runs 30 days before silence counts as consent.

Arrival, or the Same Risk With a Better Account

Hougan's reading treats Monday's forecast as proof that bitcoin graduated. A bank that once dismissed the asset now puts a number on its next decade, and that number beats stocks6. His view rests on JPMorgan's own math, the same figures the bank published itself.

Shah and Cristallo's own words cut the other way. The analysts who wrote the forecast kept bitcoin out of the models that actually guide client money5. They cited the same volatility Hougan waves off. A bank can publish a bullish number and still refuse to act on it, and this report does both in the same paragraph.

XRP's week fits the same pattern once the two forecasts are set side by side. An account drew millions of views and zero ledger changes24. A hack from April kept paying out in October, through a mixer four separate recovery tools fail to crack910. Sixteen household names still refuse to let their own shares trade as tokens11. Crypto picked up louder headlines this week. The underlying risk, and the caution it earns from the people closest to the money, stayed exactly where it was.

Read the account and the forecast against the hack and the holdouts. The verdict favors the skeptics: attention grew, and the risk held its ground.

        By the numbers

        • XRP's new X account drew 260,000 views in its first hour and more than 4 million within 24 hours4.
        • Followers on the account reached 21,700 by the end of its first day3.
        • Fourteen years passed between the XRP Ledger's June 2012 launch and this account4.
        • JPMorgan's 10-year forecast puts bitcoin's annual return at 10 percent, ahead of stocks at 7.5 percent and gold at 5.5 percent6.
        • Bitcoin's forecast volatility runs at 55 percent a year, JPMorgan's report found6.
        • Objectors to OKX-ICE's tokenized stock venue grew from 9 to 16 companies between Oct. 15 and Oct. 1911.
        • Drift's hacker moved $61 million in Ether to Tornado Cash, out of roughly $194 million still held9.
        • April's original exploit drained $270 million from the protocol10.

        What to watch

Hyperliquid Policy Center's five requests now sit with regulators past the Oct. 20 comment deadline, and a final rule will show how many survive78. OKX-ICE's 30-day objection window keeps running, so the list of companies blocking their own tokenized shares could still grow before it closes11. JPMorgan's next move on bitcoin matters more than Monday's forecast5. Watch whether the bank ever folds the asset into the core models it uses for client portfolios. Investigators are tracking the Drift hacker's remaining $194 million9. Their work will show whether any of it can still be traced before it reaches a mixer too.
