The take

Watcher.Guru posted the news at 2:28 p.m. UTC on Oct. 30. The post named North Korea in the Binance hack. It called the theft the biggest one yet. The post got 27,516 likes fast. Almost 1,000 people joined the thread. TRM Labs backs the North Korea claim. TRM is a firm that tracks crypto crime for a living. It says a group called TraderTraitor did the job. TraderTraitor works for North Korea's government. TRM calls its own proof strong. The group moved close to $6.36 billion out of Binance. Most of that sum left in about 20 minutes. Binance keeps a hot wallet for daily trades. A hot wallet stays linked to the open internet. That link makes it fast to use. It also makes it a target. This hack beats the 2025 Bybit theft for size. Bybit lost near $1.5 billion that year. Both thefts trace back to the same North Korean unit. Binance has frozen about $3 billion so far. Tether, Circle and other firms helped with that freeze. Bitcoin fell to $76,889 within a day. That marks a drop near 2.5 percent, CoinGecko says. The drop tracked the hack news closely. Search terms about North Korea jumped fast in the United States. People wanted one answer above all. Who did this, and how. The trail now points past one hacker to a whole state. North Korea has leaned on crypto theft for years to fund its weapons work. The Bybit case taught the trade to watch for the same signs. Binance's size turned this hack into the biggest test the trade has faced. The exchange says it will cover every dollar lost. That promise rests on one word, trust. Crypto users want proof more than a promise. The speed of this post shows how fast crypto news now travels. Often, the facts land only after the news does.

CZ runs Binance's biggest X account. He posted at 4:01 p.m. UTC on Oct. 30. His exchange had lost about $6.3 billion two days before. That sum sets a dollar record for crypto theft. CZ said the record looks smaller in coin terms. He pointed to Mt. Gox, an old Japanese exchange. Mt. Gox lost 650,000 bitcoin back in 2014. Bitcoin traded far lower then than it does today. CZ said that old loss still beats his hack in coin count. He asked readers to judge size by more than one number. The post drew 7,475 likes within hours. It pulled 1,249 replies and quote posts. Binance's own coin, BNB, sits near $699 today. That price moved only a little over the past day, CoinGecko shows. Bitcoin itself sat near $76,889 UTC, down about 2.5 percent. Binance has frozen roughly $3 billion of the stolen funds. The exchange plans to cover the rest from its own cash. CZ's framing turns a record loss into a smaller story. It asks readers to grade a crisis on the house's own terms. A chief who just lost $6.3 billion chose math over an apology. He picked the frame that makes his firm look sturdier. Readers can check his numbers against the record on their own. Mt. Gox's exchange shut down for good after its loss. Binance aims to prove its hack reads as a different kind of story. The real test lands on Nov. 2. Binance plans to post a full reserves report that day. That report should show if the cash CZ counts on sits where he says. Until then, the comparison stays one man's spin on his own bad week. The $6.3 billion figure behind it is still Binance's own math too.

The take

The Kobeissi Letter posted at 11:08 a.m. UTC on Oct. 30. The account covers markets for a large crowd on X. Its post told a smaller, odder side of the hack story. Elon Musk had mocked Binance online as the hack news broke. CZ, Binance's founder, asked Musk to stop. CZ wrote that it was a bad time to troll. He pointed to Binance's stake in Musk's company, SpaceX. That stake came from a $500 million investment years back. CZ said the stake is worth over $1 billion today. He asked Musk to show a little support instead. Kobeissi's post carried that exchange to a far wider crowd. It gathered 6,964 likes within hours. It drew 331 replies and quote posts. Binance itself had lost about $6.3 billion in the hack two days earlier. Bitcoin sat near $76,889 UTC as the story spread, CoinGecko shows. The joke and the crisis sat side by side in one thread. One line named a stolen fortune. The next line named a rocket company's stock. That mix drew eyes a plain hack update rarely earns alone. Musk and CZ have traded jabs online for years. This hack gave their old habit a fresh, costly stage. A $6.3 billion loss became the setup for a one-line joke. The joke centered on a stock stake worth a tenth of the hack. The post shows how fast a crisis can turn into online banter. It shows how a billion-dollar figure can still read as a punchline. Readers got the drama and the dollar figure in one short scroll. Few of them needed to open a single news site to get both. Fewer still stopped to ask why a hack and a joke now share one feed.

What it says about us

A $6 billion hack still makes room for a joke about a rocket stock.

The take

Richard Teng runs Binance as its co-chief executive. He posted a video update at 2:32 p.m. UTC on Oct. 30. In it, he laid out Binance's plan after the hack. The exchange had already set aside $6.34 billion. That sum should cover every lost dollar, Teng said. He said the hack hit only Binance's own hot wallet. A hot wallet is the live store an exchange uses for daily trades. Customer deposits sat untouched the whole time, he said. Teng aimed for withdrawals to restart within about 40 hours. He also promised a full reserves report by Nov. 2. A reserves report lists the coins a firm says it still holds. That report should show the cash the exchange says sits behind user funds. The video drew 3,426 likes within hours. It pulled 552 replies from worried users and watchers. Binance's own prior post had put the hack's impact near $6.3 billion. Bitcoin traded near $76,889 UTC as Teng spoke, CoinGecko shows. A short video became Binance's main tool to calm its users. It skipped charts and skipped legal language. It carried one face, a clear number and a deadline. That choice fits a trade built on trust between strangers online. Users rarely get to check a vault, so they lean on a face and a promise. Teng's 40-hour clock and his Nov. 2 report give users a date to hold him to. If Binance misses either mark, the promise turns into a new, worse story fast. If it hits both, the hack becomes a lesson with a tidy ending. Either way, the trade now waits on paperwork to settle the question. A promise made on video only holds once a ledger backs it up.

What it says about us

A hacked exchange tries to buy back trust with a face and a date.

The take

Binance's main account posted at 7:58 p.m. UTC on Oct. 30. The post carried the firm's second update on its hack. The first update had named one weak spot, a staff laptop. This update named more than one point of entry. Binance called the attack complex. It said staff still had the case open. The firm had already frozen close to $3 billion in stolen funds. It had set aside $6.34 billion of its own cash. That cash should cover the rest of the loss. Deposits kept working the whole time, Binance said again. Withdrawals stayed paused while staff rebuilt the service. Binance aimed to reopen them within roughly 48 hours. The update drew 2,933 likes within hours. It pulled 385 replies from users who wanted a fixed date. Bitcoin sat near $76,889 UTC as the update went out. CoinGecko logged that price. A short post, mostly a link, became Binance's main tool for a second day. The firm chose small drips of fact over one long statement. Each drip gave the trade one new fact to chew on. Each drip adds a number, a cause or a deadline. That pace fits a mess where the full cause stays open still. It also keeps Binance's name in front of a trade watching closely. Staff found this second breach point a full day after the first one. That gap shows how deep the review still runs. Users now hold two updates and two sets of open questions. A third update, plus the Nov. 2 report, should start to close that gap. Until then, Binance's own feed stands as the clearest record the trade can read today. Every new post adds one more line to that growing record.

What it says about us

The exchange answers a growing crisis one short post and one number at a time.

The take

Stani Kulechov built Aave, a crypto lending project. He posted at 2:02 p.m. UTC on Oct. 30. His post said Aave had turned lending back on. A short freeze had come first. That freeze came right after the Binance hack. The Binance hacker had used Aave to dodge a stablecoin freeze. A stablecoin is a coin firms tie to the dollar. Firms can freeze a stablecoin in a bad wallet. The hacker put in $60 million of one such coin. He used it as backing for a loan. Against that backing, he took out $44.6 million in a coin called wrapped ether. A firm finds it far harder to freeze wrapped ether than a stablecoin. That gap let stolen value slip past the usual freeze tools. Guards who watch Aave's code moved fast once they saw the move. They paused new loans across 16 networks. The pause aimed to block more of the same trick. Kulechov said old loans stayed open the whole time. He said every loan on Aave still held more backing than debt. His post drew 368 likes, modest next to the hack's huge totals. Aave's own coin, AAVE, carries a market value near $2 billion today. CoinGecko logged that value. That size puts Aave well inside crypto's top 200 projects. The quiet fix behind this post matters more than its small like count hints. A tool built for open loans became, for one hour, an exit route for stolen cash. Aave's guards closed that gap fast. They moved before most users even saw the news. The hack showed how one open system can catch risk from another system's gap. It also showed that a quick, plain fix can beat a loud public fight.

What it says about us

A quiet code fix did more to slow a hacker than any public post did.
