“Alchemy hired Bill Platt, an Amazon Web Services veteran, as chief operating officer on October 28, 2025, 18 days after what its release called crypto's largest liquidation cascade in history. Does experience built in cloud computing translate to blockchain infrastructure under stress?”

Alchemy named Bill Platt chief operating officer in a press release dated October 28, 20251. Platt joined from Amazon Web Services, where he led "agentic AI" platforms including AWS Transform, Kiro, and Amazon Q Developer, the release said. Alchemy's announcement called the company the infrastructure behind 70% of crypto applications and $150 billion in annual transactions.

      The move

Alchemy tied the hire to a stress test. The release said Platt joined “just as Alchemy's infrastructure proved its mettle on October 10th, 2025, when crypto markets faced their largest liquidation cascade in history”1. Alchemy's Cortex engine kept applications including Polymarket and Coinbase running through that cascade, the release said. Nikil Viswanathan, Alchemy's chief executive, framed the timing around that event. “Bill's experience scaling infrastructure at AWS comes at exactly the right time for our industry,” Viswanathan said. Platt described his own career in the same release. “I've lived through every major computing shift of the last 35 years: mainframes to distributed systems, the internet, cloud, and AI,” Platt said.

      Before and after at Alchemy

Ahead of Platt's hire, Alchemy ran its Cortex engine as the layer handling demand spikes across the platform. The release credited Cortex with cutting Polymarket's onchain costs by more than 40%1. Cortex also doubled transaction volume for Usual, a DeFi platform, the release said. Platt's mandate covers scaling that infrastructure and developer adoption. The mandate also covers embedding artificial intelligence into Alchemy's systems, the release said, so developers lacking deep AI skills can still build autonomous financial applications. Platt pointed to one pilot already underway. “We're already exploring innovations combining AI and stablecoins, from agentic SDKs to gas sponsorship for agent-initiated transactions to predictive payment scheduling,” Platt said. The release named J.P. Morgan as a partner in that pilot.

      What to watch

Platt's mandate gives two measures to track. One is builder demand. AI-related crypto tokens had surpassed $35 billion in market capitalization by October 28, 2025, the release said, a pool of projects that could draw on Alchemy's infrastructure1. The other is the agent-to-agent payment pilot with partners including J.P. Morgan, and whether it moves from pilot to production. Platt framed the stakes directly. “Just as AWS enabled every company to become a technology company, Alchemy is enabling every financial service provider to become a programmable money institution,” Platt said.
