Algorand named Matthew Commons its first chief financial officer on March 1, 2023, effective Feb. 22. The carbon-negative Layer 1 network said so in a press release1. Commons would take “responsibility for all financial matters spanning day-to-day operations, future growth initiatives, and capital management,” the release said. He would report into Algorand's executive leadership team. “I have long admired Algorand's technology, and to be able to join at a moment of strategic evolution is incredibly exciting,” Commons said. “There are tremendous opportunities for Algorand to extend its leadership across many sectors of blockchain”. CoinDesk reported the hire on March 1, 2023, too. The outlet added that Commons holds a Chartered Financial Analyst charter and an MBA from Harvard Business School2.

The move
Algorand's interim chief executive explained why Commons fit the role. “We were very deliberate about the skills and experience we wanted in a CFO for this next phase of growth, and found Matthew's experience to be a great fit,” W. Sean Ford said in the release. “He understands blockchain technology, has been a successful entrepreneur and CEO within our industry, managed high-performing teams, led strategic planning and corresponding capital raises, executed M&A activities, and worked extensively with the investment community”1. Commons brought more than 20 years of experience to the job in March 2023, Algorand's release said. CoinDesk filled in his most recent post. He was founder and president of Commons Partners, an advisory firm with clients in cryptocurrency and technology2.
Algorand before and after
Commons had already run a blockchain company before he took Algorand's finance seat. CoinDesk reported he was co-founder, chief executive and chairman of Cambridge Blockchain, which built blockchain products for traditional finance firms, and that he sold the company to Blockchains Inc. in 20202. Algorand's release tied his arrival to a run of technical upgrades over the prior six months, including the launch of state proofs for cross-chain communication and a jump in network performance from 1,200 to 6,000 transactions per second1. The hire gave Algorand a named finance chief for the first time since its launch.
What the record shows
Algorand's own release and CoinDesk's report, both dated March 1, 2023, make up the record of Commons's appointment12. A Google News search on October 3, 2026, looked for a later dated page on Commons at Algorand. That search returned only reports from the week of the hire.
