“BlackRock has now asked the SEC to bless three separate ways to hold the same one coin. Does a third wrapper count as a bigger crypto business?”

BlackRock asked the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday to approve its third bitcoin exchange-traded fund1. The filing proposes a new fund: the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF, ticker PBIT3. PBIT caps losses. The fund caps gains too. Bloomberg Intelligence senior analyst James Seyffart read the filing and named what BlackRock still skips. “Notably, this is the third Bitcoin ETF filing from them. Still only have Bitcoin and Ethereum products — no other cryptos,” he said2. Bitcoin traded at $81,465 at 01:05 UTC Tuesday7. The filing adds a new design. PBIT itself adds zero new coins5.

What BlackRock Actually Filed

PBIT skips bitcoin itself. The fund buys call options tied to IBIT, BlackRock's existing bitcoin trust3. Those purchased options strike near 90 percent of IBIT's value when a tranche opens. Then the fund sells other calls at higher strike prices. Those sales help pay for the protection. Cash and short-term government debt fill out the rest.

The filing targets about 10 percent loss exposure on each options tranche, before fees3. PBIT runs three overlapping tranches at once. A new one starts every month, as an old one expires. BlackRock's own prospectus language stays blunt about the limits. The filing says the strategy "does not guarantee protection against investment losses"1. Its floor and cap both stay undefined. That 10 percent figure covers one tranche alone. The fund's overall result still depends on how all three tranches perform together. An investor could still lose the entire stake if the options trades go wrong. BlackRock still must set a fee for PBIT, pending the SEC's review.

A Third Wrapper for an Old Coin

BlackRock's spot bitcoin fund, IBIT, launched in January 20242. IBIT now holds roughly $65 billion. BlackRock added a second fund on June 16, 2026, the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF3. That fund sells covered calls against part of its holdings for monthly income. PBIT, filed Oct. 19, 2026, would make a third design, built around the same asset1.

Count every coin BlackRock actually sells, and the list stops at two25. Its spot funds cover only bitcoin and ether: IBIT, ETHA and the staked-ether fund ETHB. Rival issuers already run spot funds on XRP and Solana. BlackRock's combined bitcoin and ether fund assets reached $79.6 billion at the end of September6. That figure jumped 63 percent from $48.8 billion at the end of June. Appreciation in bitcoin and ether supplied $22.9 billion of that jump, about 74 percent of it. New investor money supplied the other $7.9 billion, the remaining 26 percent. Those funds earned BlackRock $39 million in fees and securities lending revenue during the quarter. The total still sits below the $104 billion peak BlackRock hit in September 2025.

        Mitchnick's Case for Staying Narrow

Robbie Mitchnick runs digital assets for BlackRock4. He has made the firm's position plain more than once. Speaking at the Digital Asset Summit in New York in March, he waved off smaller tokens. "The majority of that is nonsense," he said, describing the thousands of coins outside bitcoin and ether. IBIT's own growth gives that view some weight2.

Mitchnick's bigger argument points past crypto, toward artificial intelligence as the next source of demand4. “AI agents are very unlikely to use, you know, Fedwire and SWIFT. What is crypto? Crypto is computer-native money… AI is computer-native data and intelligence. And so there's a natural symbiosis there,” he said. Read plainly, his bet favors bitcoin and ether over any third or fourth coin.

        Geraci's Case Against Standing Still

Nate Geraci leads The ETF Store, and he reads the same facts differently5. He called BlackRock's refusal to file for XRP or Solana funds "highly risky." “Still wild to me that BlackRock is refusing to launch spot crypto ETFs other than btc & eth... Not even an index-based crypto ETF. Given massive success of IBIT, ETHA, & ETHB, they're basically making a market call that no other crypto assets have enough value IMO,” he said.

Geraci's point is about business, separate from technology5. Bitwise and Fidelity already run funds on XRP or Solana9. Together, those funds manage more than $1 billion. A review of SEC records on Aug. 27 found zero BlackRock filing for a spot XRP or Solana fund. Every month BlackRock waits, a competitor keeps that fee revenue instead.

        The Buffer's Own Trade-Off

PBIT belongs to a bigger category. Wall Street calls these buffer or defined-outcome funds8. That category carries its own warning, apart from the bitcoin-or-altcoin argument. InvestmentNews describes the buffer category as gaining steam among advisors and investors rattled by recent market swings. Buffer funds often charge more than plain index funds. Some run 0.7 percent or higher. A standard index fund can charge as little as 0.05 percent. Nathan Garrison, chief investment officer at World Investment Advisors, has questioned that exchange. “Having someone else cover the first 15 percent of any selloff sounds great, but in exchange for what?” he asked.

That question fits PBIT directly138. A PBIT investor gives up part of bitcoin's upside, to pay for a cushion BlackRock's own filing calls uncertain.

What Three Filings and Two Coins Add Up To

Mitchnick's case holds on one condition. Demand for new bitcoin and ether wrappers must keep outrunning demand for every other coin46. BlackRock's $79.6 billion in combined fund assets, and its three separate bitcoin products, both support that reading for now2.

Geraci's case holds if investors who want XRP or Solana exposure simply buy it elsewhere and stay there5. BlackRock's own numbers skip that risk, since the firm sells zero funds in either category.

Mitchnick needs investors to keep choosing new bitcoin and ether products over exposure to any other coin4. Geraci needs just one rival to pull meaningful money into XRP or Solana before BlackRock files for either one59. Both conditions stay open for now.

Both arguments rest on the same filing1. PBIT adds a third bitcoin product to a lineup that still covers two coins2. Whether that counts as growth, or as standing still, depends on what a reader expects BlackRock's crypto business to become. The next SEC filing, on any coin, will answer that question better than this one did.

        By the numbers

        • BlackRock's third bitcoin ETF filing arrived Monday, naming the ticker PBIT1.
        • IBIT, BlackRock's original spot bitcoin fund, holds roughly $65 billion2.
        • BlackRock's combined bitcoin and ether fund assets hit $79.6 billion at the end of September. That is a 63 percent jump from $48.8 billion in June6.
        • Price gains added $22.9 billion to that total; new investor money added $7.9 billion6.
        • BlackRock's crypto fund assets remain below the $104 billion peak reached in September 20256.
        • PBIT's options tranches target about 10 percent loss exposure before fees, with its floor and cap both left undefined3.
        • Bitcoin traded at $81,465 at 01:05 UTC on Oct. 207.
        • BlackRock earned $39 million in fees and securities lending revenue from its crypto funds in the third quarter6.

        What to watch

The SEC still must rule on PBIT. A registration filing can be amended, delayed or withdrawn before any fund trades13. Watch whether BlackRock names a launch date or a fee for PBIT in its next amendment. IBIT and the Premium Income ETF each followed that same path before they opened. Watch, too, whether BlackRock's next SEC filing adds a coin beyond bitcoin and ether. Geraci has predicted that move. Mitchnick's public comments point the other way.
