The move
Cipher Mining's own release framed the hire around regulatory readiness. Iwaschuk would “lead Cipher Mining's legal operations, including regulatory compliance, government relations and related matters,” the release said1. He would also join the executive management team as the company navigated "a developing regulatory environment". Tyler Page, Cipher Mining's chief executive officer, tied the hire to Iwaschuk's background across asset classes. “Will's proven expertise and understanding of new products and an evolving financial services industry across asset classes make him an ideal match for our growing company,” Page said. Iwaschuk answered in the same release. “I am excited to become a part of Cipher Mining's leadership and to help the Company realize its objective of becoming the U.S.-based Bitcoin mining champion,” he said.

Iwaschuk became Cipher Mining Technologies' first named chief legal officer on March 18, 20211. Cipher Mining still operated as a private company then, preparing for its planned Nasdaq debut under the ticker CIFR. Iwaschuk's résumé ran outside crypto. He had been a partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, advising on broker-dealer and Dodd-Frank Act matters, after an earlier run as a vice president and associate general counsel at Goldman Sachs & Co.. His first legal post came as an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP. He earned his law degree and his bachelor's degree at the University of British Columbia.

Cipher Mining kept Iwaschuk in the legal seat for two years. On March 20, 2023, the company added to his title, naming him co-president alongside Patrick Kelly while he kept his chief legal officer and corporate secretary posts3. “Everyone at Cipher has been quietly working hard to get to this exciting stage of the Company's growth,” Iwaschuk said in the 2023 release. Page credited the promotion to tenure that predated Cipher's public listing. Iwaschuk and Kelly “have been part of the executive management team at Cipher since well before we went public,” Page said on March 20, 2023.
