“Bitdeer's board approved Michael Potter as chief financial officer on May 26, 2026, ten weeks before the Bitcoin miner announced a colocation lease its own executives valued at $4.7 billion. Does a semiconductor-industry finance veteran change how a crypto miner finances its next phase?”

Bitdeer's board approved Michael Potter as chief financial officer, effective May 26, 2026. The appointment arrived in a Form 6-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission1. Potter succeeded Jianchun Liu, who resigned as CFO effective June 30, 2026. The filing attributed Liu's exit to personal reasons, separate from any dispute with Bitdeer. Potter brought nearly two decades of chief financial officer experience to the job. He most recently served at Corsair Gaming from November 2019 to December 2025, leading the company's September 2020 initial public offering.

      The move

Liu's exit built in overlap rather than a clean break. He agreed to remain as CFO through June 30, 2026, "to ensure an orderly transition," the 6-K said. After that date, Liu would stay on at Bitdeer as a principal advisor1. Bitdeer's filing listed Potter's earlier roles too. He served as senior vice president, CFO and chief legal officer at Canadian Solar from 2011 to 2016, with CFO roles at the semiconductor firms Lattice Semiconductor and NeoPhotonics even earlier. A board seat followed. Potter chaired the audit committee at Cordelio Power, a privately held renewable energy platform, the filing said. He also holds a graduate diploma in public accountancy from McGill University. A bachelor of commerce in accounting from Concordia University rounds out his credentials, and he is a chartered professional accountant in Quebec, Canada.

      Before and after at Bitdeer

Bitdeer was converting its power infrastructure into long-term contracted revenue when Potter stepped into the CFO seat. On an Aug. 10, 2026 earnings call, he introduced himself to investors for the first time. “I'm happy to join everyone for the first time as Bitdeer's CFO,” Potter said. "Execution remains our top priority"2. Chief Strategy Officer Haris Basit called the Volta lease at Bitdeer's Tydal site, announced on August 4, a "proof point." He said it turned the power portfolio into "long duration contracted revenue". The transcript recorded second-quarter revenue of $228.8 million, up 47% year over year. Bitdeer's net loss for the quarter reached $92.3 million, tied to higher electricity and depreciation costs.

      What to watch

Two commitments from the Aug. 10 call will show whether Potter's finance strategy holds. Bitdeer filed a new shelf registration during the quarter, plus a $1 billion prospectus supplement to its stock program. Potter's team said the move would help fund AI infrastructure and power land deals2. A second commitment favors debt financing over more stock sales, aimed at Bitdeer's remaining $500 million in Tydal development costs. Chief Executive Jihan Wu pointed to Malaysia as the near-term focus. Bitdeer has signed AI data center capacity there, and Wu called the bottleneck "our execution".
