Crypto's 401(k) Post Beats Bitcoin's Crash for Likes

A retirement-plan rule under White House review drew more likes Friday than any post about Bitcoin's price drop.

“A retirement rule drew more than double the likes of Bitcoin's own crash post Friday. Does paperwork now beat a falling price for attention?”

Watcher.Guru posted four words Friday afternoon. "Bitcoin falls under $75,000," the account wrote1. Hours earlier, it had posted different news. A federal rule could soon let 401(k) plans hold crypto. It had just reached the White House for its final review23. The policy post still won the day. It held 7,685 likes by evening. The crash post held 3,432, fewer than half as many.

A Rule With Zero Deadline of Its Own

The U.S. Department of Labor sent the rule to the White House on Nov. 5, under the filing number 1210-AC382. Its Employee Benefits Security Administration wrote it. The rule tells retirement-plan fiduciaries, the people who must act in savers' interests first, how to weigh crypto against stocks and bonds. Six factors guide that call: performance, fees, liquidity, valuation, benchmarks and complexity. The department first floated the plan on March 30 and closed its public comment window on June 1. Fiduciaries must “prudently balance potentially higher expenses against the objectives of seeking greater long-term net returns and broader diversification of investments,” The Block reported, describing the department's own words4.

Keith Sonderling runs the department now, as its 31st secretary5. He took the official oath on Oct. 2. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent administered a ceremonial oath a week later, in the Oval Office. The Senate had confirmed him on Sept. 30. Sonderling previously sat on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and ran the department's Wage and Hour Division before that. He had led the Labor Department as acting secretary since April, after Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned that month6. crypto.news still called him the deputy secretary in its Nov. 6 report on the rule's review. That title fit him only before April.

Chavez-DeRemer pitched the rule herself, back in March, months before she left the post7. Sonderling struck a similar note on Nov. 5. The rule, he said, “refrains from saying that any asset class is any better or worse than other investment types”2. Two senators had already told him to scrap it, five months earlier.

The rule now sits with the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the White House unit that checks big rules before they publish. A decades-old executive order usually gives that office 90 days to finish a review, with one 30-day extension allowed9. crypto.news found this rule carries zero built-in deadline of its own2. The review could run short, or it could run long.

Both sides, in their own words

Three more Watcher.Guru posts carried real news Friday. Every one of them fell short of the rule post's 7,685 likes.

Russia's central bank finished new trading rules for everyday investors that day11. Retail buyers can purchase Bitcoin, Ether and the stablecoin USDT once the rules start Nov. 17. A retail buyer outside the bank's "qualified investor" category faces a cap of 300,000 rubles a year, about $3,700, through each broker or exchange12. Qualified investors, who pass a wealth or experience test, face zero such cap. The Moscow Exchange plans to add crypto trading of its own on Dec. 1, Cointelegraph reported. Watcher.Guru's post on the change held 5,310 likes10.

The U.S. Treasury Department moved against a different target the same day. Its Financial Crimes Enforcement Network ordered banks to sever ties with MEXC Global, a large crypto exchange holding $4.48 billion in assets14. Treasury tied $16 billion in transactions to the exchange, spanning Iran, North Korea and Russia, including $1.5 billion linked to Russian sanctions evasion15. The order takes effect 30 days after it posts in the Federal Register. Bessent's name turns up twice in this story. He had administered Sonderling's Oval Office oath a month earlier. His own department moved against MEXC the same Friday the rule reached its review. Secretary Scott Bessent framed the choice in blunt terms. “Financial institutions cannot have it both ways: Either you support the Iranian regime, or you have access to the U.S. financial system,” he said. Watcher.Guru's post on the order held 3,941 likes13.

A third post warned of tighter rules ahead. Democrats had just won both chambers of Congress17. Rep. Maxine Waters plans to expand her own crypto consumer-protection amendment into a bigger market-structure bill, Decrypt reported. Her bigger bill would hand the SEC more supervisory power and limit the CFTC's role. Fairshake, crypto's main political fund, still backed 29 winning candidates even as the chamber flipped, CNBC reported18. Coinbase policy lead Kara Calvert called the incoming Congress the most crypto-friendly freshman class yet. “With last night's results, the 120th Congress is on track to have more new pro-crypto members than we've ever seen in any freshman class,” she said. Watcher.Guru's post on the shift held 1,931 likes16.

Replies told a different story than likes. The crash post drew 319 of them. Its counterpart on the rule drew 289, a gap of 30 the other way.

Money moved on the crash side too. Spot Bitcoin and Ether funds had lost money for six straight days before Friday19. On Friday those funds pulled in $252.5 million instead, led by BlackRock's $112.44 million and Fidelity's $61.64 million. Ether funds added $12.51 million net, even after Grayscale's ETHE shed $3.52 million. Bitcoin itself traded at $75,894 at 23:48 UTC, CoinGecko showed20.

The rule carries less certainty than its own like count suggests. Its review sits with zero deadline of its own, by crypto.news's own count. A reader who judges weight strictly by likes would miss two other facts. The crash carried real, measurable losses, and the policy could still take months to resolve.

Both Sides of a Retirement Bet

Chavez-DeRemer made the clearest case for letting crypto into retirement plans, back when she still ran the department. “This proposed rule will show how plans can consider products that better reflect the investment landscape as it exists today,” she said in March7.

Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren made the opposite case, in a 14-page letter sent to Sonderling two months later. “The DOL's efforts to weaken safeguards that deter retirement saving funds from being invested into volatile and largely unregulated digital assets would jeopardize Americans' hard earned income and benefit the digital asset industry at the cost of Americans' retirement savings,” they wrote8. Rep. Bobby Scott, the House Education and Workforce Committee's senior Democrat, signed the same letter.

Both readings rest on the same rule. One side treats crypto as an asset a saver might reasonably want. The other treats it as a risk that safeguards exist to block. Fiduciaries will make that call plan by plan. They will weigh the same six factors the rule lists for any alternative asset, once the review clears2.

      By the numbers

      • Rule post: 7,685 likes and 289 replies, as of 23:50 UTC on Nov. 63.
      • Crash post: 3,432 likes and 319 replies, as of 23:50 UTC on Nov. 61.
      • Bitcoin price: $75,894, as of 23:48 UTC on Nov. 6, CoinGecko showed20.
      • OIRA's standard review window: 90 days under Executive Order 12866, with a possible 30-day extension9.
      • MEXC transactions Treasury flagged: $16 billion, with $1.5 billion of it tied to Russian sanctions evasion15.
      • Russia's retail crypto cap: 300,000 rubles a year, about $3,700, starting Nov. 1712.
      • Bitcoin and Ether ETF inflows Friday: $252.5 million, the first gain after six days of outflows19.

      What to watch

Watch whether bitcoin's price holds above $75,000 in the days ahead. Friday's ETF inflows and the week's broader slide point in different directions. The rule's own review is worth tracking too. See whether it clears the 90-day window regulators usually keep, or stretches past it under its own open-ended filing. Either answer will show whether crypto's case for savers' retirement accounts rests on more than one post's likes.
