“Pravjit Tiwana, an Amazon Web Services general manager, became Gemini's chief technology officer on January 24, 2022, and The Block reported on November 6, 2023, 22 months later, that he was leaving, the same year the SEC sued the exchange. Does a short tenure at the top say more about the hire or the year it landed in?”

Gemini co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss named Pravjit Tiwana chief technology officer on January 24, 2022. Tiwana "joins us from Amazon Web Services," they wrote, where he ran edge services including Amazon CloudFront1. Crowdfund Insider confirmed the hire on January 25, 2022, writing that “the team at digital asset firm Gemini is pleased to welcome Pravjit Tiwana as their new Chief Technology Officer”2. Tiwana had spent more than six years at AWS. Before that he held product and engineering roles at Microsoft and Disney.

      The move

Gemini's co-founders set out what the job would cover. Tiwana would "lead our engineering and product teams," they wrote, adding that he would help Gemini "scale and deliver value to our customers with speed and reliability"1. His own reason for the move appeared in the same post. "I want to help build Web3 and the decentralized Metaverse," he said. “The promise is as big as the Internet itself and Gemini is well-positioned to help build and catalyze that future.”

      Gemini before and after

By November 2023, Tiwana also served as chief executive of Gemini's Asia-Pacific business, The Block reported3. Gemini's own announcement left his predecessor unnamed. The post framed the hire as added senior leadership in a stretch of rapid growth1.

      What came next

The Block reported on November 6, 2023, 22 months after Tiwana's hire, that he was leaving Gemini. Citing Bloomberg, the outlet wrote that he "will be leaving his role as Gemini's CTO this month," an account built on two anonymous sources3. Gemini faced two disputes that week, The Block reported on November 6, 2023: one with lending partner Genesis and its parent, Digital Currency Group, and a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Tiwana had tried to reshape Gemini's culture to run more like Amazon's, the report said, a shift that pushed some employees to leave.
