“Tanya Woods, a lawyer who spent years advocating for Canada's blockchain industry, became general counsel of bitcoin miner Hut 8 on January 26, 2021, to manage the regulatory risk of one company inside it. Does advocating for an industry prepare a lawyer to defend one company within it?”

Hut 8 Mining Corp. named Tanya Woods general counsel and executive vice president of regulatory affairs on January 26, 2021, effective February 11. Woods joined with nearly 20 years of legal experience, Hut 8 said. She had served as founding managing director of Canada's first Chamber of Digital Commerce, a group built to grow the country's blockchain industry. Woods reported to Jaime Leverton, who had become Hut 8's chief executive two months earlier, the release stated.

      The move

Woods tied her new role to the moment the industry was in. “I am delighted to join Hut 8, a Canadian leader in the cryptocurrency sector, in an exciting and crucial year for the organization and for the broader industry. I look forward to being a part of Hut 8's growth as a long-term advocate for digital innovation and a passionate champion of Blockchain technology,” Woods said, according to the release1. Leverton welcomed her in the same release. “She brings a long history of expertise and a proven track-record as a successful advocate for innovation, growth and adoption within the blockchain ecosystem in Canada and internationally,” Leverton said.

Why hire a regulatory specialist straight out of an advocacy group? Canadian Lawyer reported that Woods had spent her prior role advocating for the same industry she would now navigate inside one company. She had advocated for Canada's digital innovation sector both at home and in global trade negotiations2. Hut 8 called the hire part of a transition under its new chief executive. Woods would join "a diverse and ambitious team" assembled "to help propel future success and growth," the release said1.

Woods held two Masters of Laws degrees, one in technology law, when she joined1. Her earlier roles included strategic advisor and legal counsel for BCE Inc., Microsoft and Nintendo, the release said. Canadian Lawyer reported she joined alongside two other recent Hut 8 hires: Sue Ennis as head of investor relations, Jason Zaluski as head of technology2. Her appointment created a dedicated regulatory affairs post at the miner for the first time, paired with the general counsel title.

      What came next

Hut 8's top legal seat changed hands again within two years. Canadian Lawyer reported on June 22, 2022, that Hut 8 had appointed Aniss Amdiss as chief legal officer, effective July 113. Amdiss would lead the company's legal and governance portfolio and serve as corporate secretary, reporting to Leverton. He came to the role from four years as general counsel at the Nasdaq-listed healthcare company Greenbrook TMS, the report said.
