The appointment
Pascal Gauthier, Ledger's president, named the reason for the New York office in the announcement. “New York City is the center of the financial world, hence having our Ledger Vault operations based in the region was a natural fit,” Gauthier said. “Having spent his whole career working as a leader in enterprise and financial services products, Demetrios Skalkotos is the perfect candidate to bring Ledger Vault to life and oversee its continued growth.”1 Crowdfund Insider confirmed the appointment and the office move on Nov. 26, 2018, citing the company directly2.
Skalkotos described the product's purpose in his own quote from the announcement. “As Blockchain revolutionizes the financial system, so must the security solutions that protect it,” he said. “Secure storage of large multi-cryptocurrency funds is a highly complex challenge that cannot be solved by just implementing procedures.”1 The custody tool pairs a custom operating system, BOLOS, with a hardware security module chip, a combination the company calls unique among crypto-asset protection firms.
What Ledger Vault targeted
Ledger built Ledger Vault for institutions, beyond individual wallet buyers. The announcement named financial institutions, family offices and fund managers as the intended customers. It offered a governance framework for multiple approvers on one account1. New York, standing apart from the Paris headquarters, put the custody product inside the city where those institutional buyers sit.
What the record shows
Ledger opened its New York office on Nov. 26, 2018, the same day it named Skalkotos. He ran Ledger Vault for financial institutions, family offices and fund managers1. Skalkotos led a tool pairing Ledger's BOLOS operating system with a security chip, a mix the company called unique at the time.
