“MEXC, an exchange built on zero trading fees, hired Robert MacDonald from rival Bybit as chief compliance officer on July 22, 2026, soon after it began offering equities-related products. Does a compliance hire signal an exchange is chasing regulators or chasing new markets?”

MEXC named Robert MacDonald chief compliance officer on July 22, 20261. MacDonald came from Bybit, where he had run that exchange's global licensing strategy as chief legal and compliance officer, MEXC said. He had also held compliance posts at Standard Chartered and Binance. MEXC had recently added equities-related products and IPO access to its crypto trading, citybiz reported2.

      The move

MEXC's release framed the hire around trust. “As the digital asset industry matures, trust won't be a competitive advantage, but the price of entry, and compliance takes on a bigger role,” MacDonald said in the announcement1. Chief executive Vugar Usi tied the hire to that broader product push. “As the digital asset industry matures, innovation and compliance can no longer be treated as separate priorities. Robert's deep experience across traditional finance, fintech, and digital assets will help us strengthen the regulatory and governance foundation needed to scale responsibly,” Usi said.

Three priorities make up MacDonald's mandate: governance rules that work across jurisdictions, risk tools built on data, and direct talks with regulators, the release said1. Asian Legal Business had ranked him among its top 15 chief compliance officers in 2025.

      MEXC's wider push

MEXC says it serves more than 40 million users across 170-plus markets. Zero-fee trading on its platform covers more than 3,000 digital assets, by its own count1. Equities-related products and IPO access joined that lineup in recent months, citybiz reported2. The expansion raises the stakes on the governance work MacDonald now runs. Exchanges that widen their product lines draw heavier regulatory scrutiny, citybiz added.

      What to watch

MacDonald's mandate sets a plain test. Watch for new licenses in the places where MEXC pushes equities-linked trading, and for a named regulator in a future MEXC statement1. Either would count.
