“David Schwartz posed in front of the wrong Times Square billboard on Oct. 14, 2026, and 9,091 people liked the mistake within a day. Does a joke that size move a market, or just a timeline?”

David Schwartz stood in front of the wrong billboard in Times Square. He posted a selfie anyway, at 20:09 UTC on Oct. 14, 2026. "Oops, wrong billboard," he wrote on X1. The screen behind him advertised Novig, a sports prediction app, under a photo of actress Sydney Sweeney. Schwartz is Ripple's chief technology officer emeritus, one of the first engineers to write the XRP Ledger's code. His joke became the biggest laugh on crypto Twitter that day.

The Wrong Billboard

Schwartz had a real billboard to find that night. Evernorth, an XRP treasury company, rang Nasdaq's closing bell earlier on Oct. 142. The bell marked its first days of trading under the ticker XRPN. Times Square's screens carried Evernorth's name and ticker as part of the celebration. Schwartz photographed the wrong one first.

Charles Hoskinson spotted the mix-up within the hour. Cardano's founder runs a blockchain that competes with Ripple's for payments and asset business. He replied on X, "I knew she had XRP."3 The joke claimed Sweeney secretly held the token Schwartz helped build. Sweeney's camp stayed quiet about the joke, and the public record offers only Hoskinson's wit as evidence.

Schwartz took the joke in stride. He posted a second selfie, this time standing in front of the real Evernorth screens. "Got it this time," he wrote3. The exchange spread fast across crypto social media. By 17:45 UTC on Oct. 15, Schwartz's original post carried 9,091 likes and 676 replies, X's own public count showed1.

A joke outran the facts behind it once before, too. XRP jumped 20% the week his transition to CTO emeritus took effect, in January 2026. Asked what drove the rally, Schwartz joked that retirement explained it: "It's because I retired. Next I'll try cutting my hair"9. Record ETF inflows and fresh regulatory clarity explained that climb far better than any haircut plan did.

Both sides, in their own words

Does a joke that size move a market, or just a timeline?

“XRP's price dropped 4.53% to $1.29 today, falling six cents as traders reacted to the billboard mix-up while Bitcoin fell 2.7% to $81,142, dragging down tokens across crypto exchanges”

    The Billboard Ripple Actually Wanted

Evernorth holds about 473 million XRP2. The company raised roughly $300 million through its combination with a special purpose acquisition company, Armada Acquisition Corp. II. Its common stock began trading on Nasdaq on Oct. 12. Asheesh Birla founded Evernorth. He once sat on Ripple's board, and Ripple itself backed his new company's capital raise.

Birla framed the listing as a serious institutional step, built for public markets rather than for a meme. “In setting out to build Evernorth, our goal was to create something unique: an actively managed XRP treasury purpose-built to support the growth of the ecosystem with the transparency and governance that public markets demand,” Birla said in the company's Oct. 9 announcement2. His sentence names governance and transparency, the kind of claims a photo mix-up leaves untested.

His plan went past the ticker, in the same statement. “We'll be deploying capital across the XRP economy, supporting the infrastructure and use cases that expand XRP's utility, and pursuing strategies designed to grow XRP per share over time,” Birla said2. Ripple, Pantera Capital, Kraken, SBI Group, Arrington Capital and GSR backed the combination.

Nasdaq's closing bell ceremony drew company leaders and investors to Times Square that afternoon2. Dozens of advertisers shared the same screens that day, Novig among them. Schwartz simply looked up at the wrong one first.

The two billboards told different stories within the same hour. One celebrated a treasury company's debut on Wall Street, backed by governance language and a $300 million raise. The other turned into a punchline, shared and reshared by the founder of a rival blockchain.

A Joke, Then a Price Drop

XRP fell 4.5% to $1.29 on Oct. 15, TipRanks reported at 14:15 UTC4. Bitcoin fell 2.7% to $81,142 over the same stretch. The two tokens moved together that afternoon, though only one of them carried a viral joke on its back.

TipRanks's Annika Masrani tied the billboard directly to the slide. “XRP's price dropped 4.53% to $1.29 today, falling six cents as traders reacted to the billboard mix-up while Bitcoin fell 2.7% to $81,142, dragging down tokens across crypto exchanges,” Masrani wrote4. Her sentence links a meme to a market. Crypto reporters make that link often, because a joke with 9,091 likes is an easy story to tell beside a falling chart.

Ether took the sharpest hit of the three major tokens. Its futures lost $286 million to liquidation, more than bitcoin's $197 million7. Ether's futures market runs smaller than bitcoin's too, CoinDesk reported. That gap points to crowded, leveraged ether bets, a story with zero billboard in it.

The Case Against Blaming the Joke

Hours before Schwartz's post went viral, the US government released a different kind of news. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported September producer prices up 1.3% for the month5. That beat the 0.6% forecast threefold, and marked a 6.3% rise for the year. September consumer prices had already landed at 3.7% annually, above the 3.6% forecast6. Both readings pointed the same direction: inflation ran hotter than traders expected.

Markets moved fast on the numbers. Odds of a Federal Reserve rate increase at its Oct. 27-28 meeting jumped to 44% to 49%6. That figure stood at just 22% before the report, Decrypt found. The Fed's current target sits between 3.75% and 4.00%. Treasury yields moved too. The two-year note rose near 4.9%, and the 10-year reached about 5.3%, close to a 24-year high, Decrypt reported. Higher odds of a hike make assets that pay zero yield, bitcoin and XRP included, less attractive to hold.

The Kobeissi Letter, a macro research account widely followed on X, posted its own reaction within hours of the inflation data. “Inflation is RED hot in the US. For anyone not keeping track, US CPI inflation is now nearly double the Fed's 2% target and US PPI Inflation is more than triple that target,” the account wrote5. That argument needs zero billboard to work.

The rest of the day's market backed the macro case. South Korea's KOSPI index dropped 8% on Oct. 15, triggering a circuit breaker, the automatic trading halt that follows a drop that steep8. It was the index's 10th such halt this year. Weakness tied to US technology stocks drove the halt, fnnews.com reported. Crypto traders lost nearly $1 billion in liquidated bets over 24 hours, CoinDesk reported7. Bitcoin futures alone shed $197 million of that total, and ether futures shed $286 million. All three major tokens fell together that day. A single joke about one executive rarely explains an afternoon that global stock indexes stumbled through too.

      By the numbers

      • Likes on Schwartz's "wrong billboard" post: 9,091, with 676 replies, both as of 17:45 UTC, Oct. 15, 2026, by X's own count1.
      • XRP's price: $1.29, down 4.5% on Oct. 15, 2026, as of 14:15 UTC, TipRanks reported4.
      • Bitcoin's price: $81,142, down 2.7% over the same stretch, TipRanks reported4.
      • Evernorth's XRP treasury: about 473 million tokens, held since its Oct. 12 Nasdaq debut2.
      • Its raise: roughly $300 million in gross proceeds through its SPAC combination2.
      • September producer prices: up 6.3% year over year, nearly triple the Fed's target, Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed6.
      • Crypto liquidations: nearly $1 billion over 24 hours, CoinDesk reported, including $286 million in ether futures7.
      • KOSPI's Oct. 15 drop: 8%, from 6,008.81 to 5,528.05, its 10th circuit breaker of the year8.

      What to watch

Schwartz's next post will show whether he keeps riding the joke or moves past it quickly. Evernorth's purchase disclosures will show whether its Nasdaq debut built lasting demand. Watch for that demand in the company's own filings, as it buys more XRP. The Fed's Oct. 27-28 meeting offers the clearest test of the macro case. A rate hike would back the inflation story Decrypt and the Kobeissi Letter told, separate from any billboard.
