“RLUSD now settles inside Cross River Bank's system in three to five seconds, for a fraction of a cent, Ripple and the bank said. Does one bank's API make a stablecoin part of its banking infrastructure, or does infrastructure need more than one connection to earn the name?”

Ripple put a dollar stablecoin inside a real bank's own computer system this week. Cross River Bank will run RLUSD through its Core Operating System, the bank and Ripple said on Oct. 15, 20261. Mastercard and the stablecoin firm BVNK opened a platform on Oct. 15, 2026, that turns stablecoins into bank payouts and card balances2. Two companies picked one week to make the same case: a stablecoin belongs inside a bank's own system.

RLUSD Moves Into a Bank's Own System

Ripple's announcement post pulled 4,821 likes and 277 replies by 01:21 UTC on Oct. 16, 2026, X's own count showed8. That is more attention than most single crypto trades draw on social media.

Cross River calls its backend the Core Operating System. Fintech clients already use it for ACH transfers and wires. Now they can pick RLUSD from the same menu, Cross River and Ripple said1. One API connection moves money whether it travels as dollars or as a stablecoin.

Settlement on RLUSD takes three to five seconds. The fee runs to a fraction of a cent, Cross River and Ripple said1. A standard wire or ACH transfer can take longer, the companies said.

RLUSD itself carries a bank-grade label already. Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary, issues the token under a New York trust company charter, Crypto Briefing reported10. Regulators oversee that charter the same way they oversee a bank's own trust powers. Cash and Treasury holdings back every RLUSD token one to one, Ripple and Cross River said1.

Markus Infanger, Ripple's senior vice president of RippleX, named the real shift behind the deal. “Stablecoins won't transform payments through parallel financial systems. They'll do it by becoming part of the banking infrastructure businesses already use,” Infanger said1.

Adam Goller, Cross River's head of fintech banking, framed the problem the deal solves. “Businesses shouldn't have to rely on several different providers to move money across the globe,” Goller said1.

RLUSD already carries more than $1 billion in value on the XRP Ledger, Ripple and Cross River said1. The ledger has settled $1.3 trillion over its life.

Both sides, in their own words

Mastercard Pays $1.8 Billion for a Seat

A slower, pricier deal got Mastercard to the same idea. Mastercard closed its purchase of BVNK on Aug. 3, 2026, after agreeing to the deal in March, Genfinity reported3. The card network paid $1.5 billion up front. Mastercard could add $300 million more through an earnout, for a deal it values at $1.8 billion.

BVNK already moved about $30 billion a year for clients before the deal closed. Its reach spanned more than 200 countries and territories, Genfinity reported3. Jesse Hemson-Struthers, BVNK's chief executive, called the sale "the most ambitious phase of our journey yet".

On Oct. 15, 2026, Mastercard and BVNK launched what they call the Global Money Platform2. The platform lets a bank or fintech convert cash to a stablecoin, The Crypto Times reported. That same connection can pay out to a local bank account or issue a stablecoin-linked card. Nuvei, Marqeta, Ontop, Bolt Group and Almond FinTech signed on first.

Raj Dhamodharan, Mastercard's executive vice president of blockchain and digital assets, called it one foundation for two kinds of money. “Global Money Platform brings together Mastercard's trusted payment infrastructure and reach with BVNK's stablecoin capabilities, giving businesses a single foundation to move value across traditional and digital ecosystems,” Dhamodharan said2.

The platform taps Mastercard Move, the network Mastercard says reaches more than 17 billion payment endpoints2. Phil Fayer, Nuvei's chair and chief executive, tied his company's plans to the same shift. “Stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important part of that future, and our work with Mastercard and BVNK will help us bring these capabilities to more businesses,” Fayer said.

Mastercard's own post on the Global Money Platform drew 1,451 likes and 70 replies by 01:21 UTC on Oct. 16, 20269. Ripple's post that named a single bank drew more than three times that count.

What 'Inside the Bank' Actually Buys a Fintech

A core banking system is the software a bank runs its accounts on. Cross River's version already handles checking balances, wires and ACH transfers for its fintech clients. Adding RLUSD to that system means a fintech requests the stablecoin through the bank's own menu, the same place it requests a wire1.

Compare that to how a fintech used a stablecoin before this deal. The fintech opened an account at a crypto exchange, moved dollars there and converted them to a stablecoin, tracked apart from its bank ledger. Cross River's menu folds that whole chain into one request a fintech already knows how to make1. Mastercard's Global Money Platform makes a similar promise for a card program. One connection replaces a separate deal with a crypto custodian, a card issuer and a bank2.

RLUSD's growth shows the appetite building before this deal closed. The stablecoin crossed $1.6 billion in market value by May 26, 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported5. By Oct. 16, 2026, its market cap reached $2.41 billion, CoinGecko showed6. That works out to growth near 51% in under five months, a pace few bank products can claim.

XRP itself, the token that pays the Ledger's transaction fees, traded at $1.34 as of 01:21 UTC on Oct. 16, 2026, CoinGecko showed7. RLUSD holds its own peg to the dollar. Its price stayed level while XRP moved on a separate market.

The Case for Tokenized Deposits Instead

One bank voice argues the opposite case. Greg Baer runs the Bank Policy Institute, the group that represents the country's largest banks. He sat on a panel on tokenized deposits and stablecoins at a Fintech Conference. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia hosted it in September 2026, SiliconANGLE reported4.

“I don't see stablecoins as a future for retail payments. The obvious alternative is tokenized deposits,” Baer said4.

Baer's security argument goes further than preference. “I think it's hard to argue that the tokenized deposits aren't far more secure than stablecoins,” he said4. A tokenized deposit stays on a bank's books, backed by deposit insurance up to its limit. Only its own issuer's reserves back a stablecoin, which sits outside that insured system.

Ripple and Mastercard answer with speed. RLUSD settles in three to five seconds, for a fraction of a cent, inside Cross River's own system1. Mastercard's own platform promises the same reach, through a card network that already touches more than 17 billion payment endpoints2. Whether that speed outweighs Baer's security argument is the question both companies leave to the fintechs choosing between them.

      By the numbers

      • RLUSD's market cap: $2.41 billion, as of 01:21 UTC, Oct. 16, 2026, CoinGecko showed6.
      • Cross River's bank-held stablecoin now carries more than $1 billion in RLUSD on the XRP Ledger1.
      • The XRP Ledger's lifetime settlement total: $1.3 trillion, Ripple and Cross River said1.
      • Mastercard's BVNK deal: $1.8 billion, closed Aug. 3, 2026, after a March agreement3.
      • BVNK's own annual volume before the deal: about $30 billion across more than 200 countries3.
      • Mastercard Move's network reach: more than 17 billion payment endpoints, Mastercard said2.
      • Ripple's announcement post: 4,821 likes and 277 replies, as of 01:21 UTC, Oct. 16, 20268.

      What to watch

Cross River's own disclosures will show whether fintech clients actually route payments through RLUSD. Right now the claim rests on Ripple's and Cross River's own word. Mastercard's Global Money Platform will show its real reach once partners sign on past Nuvei, Marqeta, Ontop, Bolt Group and Almond FinTech. A bank that actually offers a tokenized deposit at scale would give Baer's security argument its first real test against RLUSD's speed. RLUSD's own market cap, tracked against XRP's price on CoinGecko, will show whether its growth keeps pace once a bank's system counts the volume.
