“Sushi called 2024 a profitable year with more than $10 million in revenue, then handed its top job in December 2025 to Alex McCurry, whose firm, Synthesis, bought ten million of its tokens. Does a buyer running the protocol change what the tokens are worth?”

Jared Grey stepped down as Sushi's top leader on December 1, 2025, PANews reported that day2. Alex McCurry took over as chief executive, a title Sushi's own press release confirmed on December 16, 2025, two weeks after the first report1. Synthesis, the investment firm McCurry leads, acquired more than 10 million SUSHI tokens as part of the move. Grey had held the roles of Head Chef of SushiSwap and Managing Director of Sushi Labs.

      The move

PANews broke the story first. Its brief dispatch on December 1, 2025, named Grey's exit and McCurry's arrival as Sushi's new Managing Director2. Grey spoke for himself in that report. “While I will be stepping down from my leadership role, I will continue to provide strategic guidance to Alex and the team,” Grey said. Sushi's own announcement followed on December 16, 2025, through PR Newswire. The release upgraded McCurry's title to chief executive and filled in his background. Sushi called him a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree who has "built and scaled eight-figure software companies"1.

Sushi's press release tied the leadership change to its finances. Sushi "became profitable" in 2024, the release said, generating "over $10 million in revenue" across its automated market maker, aggregator and related product lines1. Katana, a layer 2 network supported by Polygon, had accumulated more than $100 million in total value locked on Sushi, the release added.

      Sushi before and after

Grey led Sushi through 2024, the year the company's own release called a "pivotal year" for profitability1. Under McCurry, Sushi said it would pursue four priorities. These are deepening liquidity and execution quality, expanding protocol-owned liquidity, strengthening tokenomics, and supporting the partners who build on Sushi. Grey keeps an advisory role at the protocol. He left the operating seat, Sushi and PANews both reported2.

      What to watch

Sushi's release pointed to two measures for judging McCurry's leadership. One is the Katana network's total value locked, against the $100 million Sushi reported in December 2025. The other is annual revenue, against the $10 million Sushi said the protocol generated in 20241. Synthesis's token purchase ties McCurry's own balance sheet to SUSHI's price, so a reader can track that stake against the entry Synthesis built in December 2025.
