“Uniswap Labs handed its top legal post to Katherine Minarik, the lawyer Marvin Ammori called the architect of Coinbase's litigation strategy, on June 10, 2024, two months after the SEC signaled it might sue. Does hiring a rival's chief litigator answer a coming SEC lawsuit?”

Marvin Ammori posted on X on June 10, 2024, that he was handing “the reins to a new Chief Legal Officer at @Uniswap this week”1. The Block reported on June 10, 2024, that the successor was Katherine Minarik, who had been deputy general counsel at Coinbase, where she led litigation and international legal teams2. Ammori had held the Uniswap Labs post since 2020, when founder Hayden Adams hired him as the company's seventh employee.

The move

Ammori named the reason for the timing in his own words. “I made this decision to prioritize spending more time with my young family, while still working on hard, thorny problems of the future of Defi policy,” Ammori wrote1. He said he would stay at Uniswap Labs full time through November 2024, then shift to a part-time role focused on global public policy for DeFi. The outgoing officer wrote that he recruited Minarik himself, calling her "the key architect of Coinbase's litigation strategy" during her time there.

The Block tied the handoff to a regulatory deadline. Minarik's appointment “comes just two months after the SEC signaled it may take action against the startup,” the outlet reported, a reference to a Wells notice the agency sends before filing charges2. Ammori's own post pointed to the same backdrop. “Our understanding was confirmed in the important legal victory for DeFi in Risley v. Uniswap, last year,” he wrote, adding that Uniswap Labs had filed a Wells response with the SEC in May 20241.

Before and after at Uniswap Labs

Ahead of the handoff, Ammori had led Uniswap Labs' legal team since late 2020. He wrote that the company had “hired 100 people, launched v3 which has supported over a trillion in volume, and onboarded millions of users” during his tenure1. Minarik took over with a different background, built at a public company already fighting the SEC in court. The Block described her as "the top legal post at the startup" and reported she assumed the role "on Monday," June 10, 2024, through her own post on X2.

What came next

Minarik held the post on March 12, 2025, nine months after the handoff. Speaking on TRM Labs' podcast on March 12, she described herself as "at Uniswap Labs now," having "joined last summer, but before about four years" at Coinbase3. She said Uniswap Labs had faced an SEC investigation "for three years" before receiving its own Wells notice in April 2024. On the same episode, Minarik said the SEC had closed that investigation against Uniswap Labs with a closure letter delivered "earlier this week," placing the end of the case in March 2025.
