Lawrence Brock, Coinbase's chief people officer, notified the company on July 22, 2026 that he would step down, effective Aug. 17, 20261. That is according to a Form 8-K Coinbase filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 23, 2026. The departure comes weeks after Brock led a May 5, 2026 restructuring that cut about 700 positions, roughly 14 percent of Coinbase's workforce, American Bazaar's Shubhangi Chowdhury reported2.

The move
Brock remains a Coinbase employee through Sept. 1, 2026, to help hand off his responsibilities1. Coinbase and Brock then entered an advisor agreement running from Sept. 2, 2026 through Nov. 30, 2026, the filing says. He collects a lump sum equal to three months of his base salary once that advisory period ends. Vesting also continues on restricted stock units scheduled to vest Nov. 20, 2026, as long as he keeps working under the agreement. Coinbase's filing names Dominique Baillet as its expected successor for the chief people officer role.
A second round of cuts behind him
Brock had overseen a similar moment before. In June 2022, he announced a hiring freeze at Coinbase and rescinded outstanding job offers. Days later, the company cut 18 percent of its staff that same month, American Bazaar reported2. “We will also rescind a number of outstanding offers for people who have not started yet. This is not a decision we make lightly, but is necessary to ensure we are only growing in the highest-priority areas,” Brock wrote in a company post at the time, as American Bazaar quoted it. The May 5, 2026 cuts, 14 percent of staff against 18 percent in June 2022, followed the same pattern. Headcount fell from about 5,000 employees to approximately 4,300, at an estimated cost of $50 million to $60 million, mostly in cash severance, American Bazaar reported. Chief Executive Brian Armstrong described that restructuring as preparation for what he called the "AI era," according to the outlet.
American Bazaar reported that Coinbase gave zero reason for Brock's exit and drew zero connection between it and the layoffs2. His departure also lands alongside other changes atop Coinbase. Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal had said earlier in July 2026 that he was leaving to join a startup, the outlet reported.
What to watch
Coinbase's second-quarter results, released on July 30, 2026, listed $52.4 million in restructuring costs3. That sits inside the $50 million to $60 million estimate American Bazaar had reported2. Brock gave notice on July 22, 2026, eight days before that accounting reached investors1. A later 8-K naming Dominique Baillet as the confirmed chief people officer would close the handover Coinbase's July 23, 2026 filing opened. Brock's advisory period runs through Nov. 30, 2026. What he does once it ends stays unstated in either source.
