Paul Grewal, Coinbase's chief legal officer and secretary, notified the company on July 8, 2026 that he would step down, effective July 31, 2026, according to a Form 8-K Coinbase filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 9, 20261. The filing closes a run Grewal himself measured in years. “Leading Coinbase's legal team through the biggest fight of our industry has been the single greatest achievement of my six-year tenure,” Grewal said in a statement carried by CoinDesk2.

The move
Coinbase and Grewal signed an advisor agreement on July 8, 2026, the day he gave notice. Under it, he provides transition and advisory services from Aug. 1, 2026 through Oct. 31, 20261. He collects a lump sum equal to three months of his base salary once that period ends. Vesting also continues on the restricted stock units due Aug. 20, 2026, as long as he keeps working under the agreement. CoinDesk's Nikhilesh De and Jesse Hamilton reported that Grewal is leaving to work at a startup. He plans to keep advising Coinbase on its trust charter work through the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency2.
Why end a six-year run now? Grewal's own words point to the SEC fight the company had just closed out. The regulator sued Coinbase in 2023, alleging it ran an unregistered broker, clearinghouse and exchange, under then-Chair Gary Gensler. President Trump's return to office led the agency to drop that suit2. Grewal credited the outcome directly. “Our legal wins helped ensure crypto not only had a future in this country, but could flourish,” he said.
Who takes the legal team
Coinbase's filing says it expects to appoint Molly Abraham, its vice president of legal, as general counsel and secretary once Grewal's resignation takes effect1. CoinDesk reported that Abraham has run multiple legal teams at Coinbase since March 2021. She previously served as general counsel at an electric flying car startup2. The outlet also reported that Ryan Van Grack will become vice chairman in a role the company expects to carry a broader, more public-facing brief. Van Grack is a former general counsel at Citadel Securities who led Coinbase's litigation work.
What to watch
Coinbase's filing uses "expects to appoint" for Abraham. A later 8-K confirming her as general counsel and secretary would close the handover the July 9, 2026 filing opened1. Grewal's advisory period runs through Oct. 31, 2026. Which startup he is joining stays unnamed in either source2. Van Grack's new, more public role at Coinbase stays undefined past the title itself.
