“Molly Abraham ran multiple legal teams at Coinbase for five years before the company said on July 9, 2026, that it expected to make her general counsel. Did Coinbase pick her for the title, or for the five years she had already spent running the team she now leads?”

Coinbase expects to name Molly Abraham its general counsel and secretary, a Form 8-K filed July 9, 2026 with the Securities and Exchange Commission says1. The move takes effect when Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal's resignation does, on July 31, 2026. Abraham has worked at Coinbase since March 2021. She has run multiple legal teams there as the company's vice president of legal, CoinDesk reported2.

      The move

Coinbase tied Abraham's elevation to Grewal's exit in a single sentence of its filing. “In connection with Mr. Grewal's resignation, the Company expects to appoint Molly Abraham, Vice President, Legal as the Company's General Counsel and Secretary,” Coinbase stated1. Grewal gave his own notice to Coinbase on July 8, 2026. He framed the moment by looking back at his own six years in the job, rather than forward at Abraham's. “Leading Coinbase's legal team through the biggest fight of our industry has been the single greatest achievement of my six-year tenure,” Grewal said in a statement2.

What the record says about her and the team she inherits

CoinDesk's Nikhilesh De and Jesse Hamilton reported that Abraham previously served as general counsel at an electric flying car startup before joining Coinbase2. Her promotion lands alongside a second change at the top of Coinbase's legal function. Ryan Van Grack will become vice chairman, CoinDesk reported, in a role Coinbase expects to carry a broader, more public-facing brief. Van Grack is a former general counsel at Citadel Securities. He led Coinbase's litigation work. Grewal's own tenure ran through Coinbase's fight with the SEC. The regulator sued Coinbase in 2023, claiming it operated as an unregistered broker, clearinghouse and exchange. President Trump's return to office led the agency to drop that suit.

      What to watch

Coinbase's filing calls the appointment an expectation, rather than a completed act. A later 8-K confirming Abraham as general counsel and secretary would close the move this one opened1. Grewal stays on as an adviser to Coinbase through Oct. 31, 2026. He is working on the company's trust charter effort at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency2. That gives Abraham a transition window while he finishes the handover. Van Grack's new public-facing role at Coinbase remains undefined past its title in either source.
