Brian Armstrong, Coinbase's chief executive, posted on X on July 25, 2024. Coinbase had added three directors to its board: Chris Lehane, Paul Clement and Christa Davies1. Lehane worked crisis and policy jobs for OpenAI at the time. Decrypt reported on July 26, 2024 that he joined "to provide strategic counsel to Coinbase's leadership"2.

The move
Armstrong named all three appointments in one post. He gave each a line of background. Lehane, he wrote, “is a renowned political strategist, known for his crisis work in the Clinton White House, for making Airbnb legal in all 50 states and worldwide, and for now helping OpenAI on policy,” and "will help us secure bipartisan, pro-crypto policy"1. “Excited to have the smartest political, legal, and financial minds from around the world (and from both sides of the aisle) joining the crypto movement,” Armstrong said.
Decrypt tied the hires to timing. The move came “amid an ongoing legal battle between Coinbase and the Securities and Exchange Commission,” the outlet reported, and Clement would join Coinbase's Audit & Compliance Committee to “push back against the SEC's overreach and fight for clear rules of the road for digital assets,” Coinbase's press release said2. Three directors with different political views joined on purpose, Decrypt reported, citing a count Coinbase said found that nine in ten Americans across the political spectrum want the financial system updated.
Coinbase's board before and after
Lehane filled a seat that had sat open since April 2024. Kathryn Haun, formerly of the venture firm Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm a16z, had stepped down then after seven years to run her own firm, Haun Ventures, Decrypt reported2. Lehane built his career outside crypto. Decrypt called him "formerly an aide to President Bill Clinton," before his work at OpenAI. Armstrong placed him beside Clement, “a powerhouse litigator who reeled in federal agency overreach by overturning Chevron in a recent supreme court case,” and Davies, Aon's chief financial officer, who also sits on Stripe's board1.
What came next
Lehane became OpenAI's vice president of global policy in August 2024, the Revolving Door Project reported, making formal the advisory role he had held before Coinbase named him to its board3. The watchdog group still listed Coinbase among his industry ties on July 9, 2026, by which date Lehane had risen to OpenAI's chief global affairs officer.
