Katie Haun said on X on April 20, 2024, that she would step down from Coinbase's board of directors. That move closed out her third term, after more than seven years in the seat1. The Block confirmed the resignation on April 20. Its report said the board would shrink from eight members to seven once her departure took effect at the company's annual shareholder meeting later that summer2.

Why Haun said she was leaving
Haun framed her exit as a matter of where her time was best spent, apart from any break with the company. “Crypto is in a remarkable expansion state, and Coinbase is well-positioned to thrive,” she wrote, adding that her venture firm, Haun Ventures, was “similarly expanding, and this feels like the right time for me to double-down on supporting our growing portfolio of founders and building a lasting venture franchise”1. The Block's Zack Abrams reported that the resignation was tied to Haun focusing on her venture investment portfolio rather than to any dispute with the company2.
What seven years covered
Haun's own post traced her tenure back to 2017, when she joined "team Coinbase" before the exchange had gone public. She credited herself with "leading the fight for global regulatory clarity" and with helping launch infrastructure projects including Base, Coinbase's layer-2 network1. Her post named the people she was leaving behind, too. “I'm filled with so much gratitude for @brian_armstrong, my other board colleagues, and the outstanding leadership inside the company,” she wrote. Armstrong, in turn, called her "a force of nature" who had taken a chance on Coinbase and helped the company go public, according to The Block2.
What came next
Coinbase's shareholders confirmed the smaller board at the company's 2024 annual meeting on June 17, 2024. An Investing.com report on the vote ran on June 20, 2024, two months after Haun's announcement. The report listed the seven directors re-elected to serve until 2025: Brian Armstrong, Marc L. Andreessen, Frederick Ernest Ehrsam III, Kelly A. Kramer, Tobias Lütke, Gokul Rajaram and Fred Wilson3. Haun's name was absent from that list, confirming the departure she had announced on April 20 had taken hold.
