Viral China Crash Claim Outruns the Real Numbers

A seven-week China selloff claim meets a twelve-week number, while Binance and Liquid Network post real recoveries.

“"China's stock market has now been bleeding for 7 straight weeks," a viral post declared on Nov. 3, 2026. The market's own chart already carried 12 straight weeks of losses when the post went up. Does a shorter claim deserve the same trust as a chart that already ran five weeks longer?”

Crypto Rover posted an alarm on X at 03:38 UTC on Nov. 3, 2026. China's stock market had just lost 1.6 trillion yuan in a single day, the post said. Seven straight weeks of losses sat behind that number, it added1. TradingView had already published a different count three days earlier. The CSI 300's real losing streak already ran 12 weeks, five weeks past the post's claim2. Two crypto exchanges posted quieter news the same week. Binance kept refilling its vault after October's $6.3 billion hack, and Liquid Network closed a smaller hole of its own.

The Claim and the Twelve-Week Chart

Crypto Rover writes as a trader and chart poster on X, with a following in the millions. Nov. 3 brought his latest warning. “CN¥1.6 TRILLION has been wiped out from Chinese stocks today. China's stock market has now been bleeding for 7 straight weeks,” he wrote1. A chart image rode along with the post. An exchange name, a time stamp and a wire source stayed off it entirely.

TradingView's Coinpedia desk had the real count on file already. The CSI 300 fell for a 12th straight week, its longest losing streak on record, down 15% across that span2. October alone cost the index 8.5%, its worst month in more than a decade. Seven weeks is a real number pulled from a real chart. It still runs five weeks short of the one the index itself already carried.

Coin Bureau, a second X account with a large crypto following, flagged the longer streak four days earlier. “The CSI 300 has officially fallen for 12 straight weeks, its longest losing streak in history,” the account wrote on Oct. 307.

    That's it for China.

Today, another $300,000,000,000 was wiped off China's stock market, pushing it deeper into BEAR market territory.

Where the Trillion-Yuan Number Breaks Down

Hello Entrepreneurs ran the viral figure the same morning, with a caveat the original post skipped. Writer Punit Panchal put the loss at CN¥1.58 trillion, near $237 billion, lost in the market's opening minutes. Then he added a line of his own. “I couldn't confirm those exact figures against an exchange or wire source,” he wrote4. His piece had embedded Crypto Rover's post beside a second one from an account called Bull Theory. That second post rounded the same loss to a flatter $237 billion. Both posts skipped a market name, a minute and a method behind their math.

A separate piece from the same outlet measured the day's actual move. The Shanghai Composite and the CSI 300 each slipped about 1% in early Nov. 3 trading, a milder drop than Friday's close3. A 1% dip across markets worth trillions still moves real money. It lands well short of a single-day wipeout counted in the hundreds of billions.

CryptoTicker had caught an identical pattern a week earlier. A near-identical trillion-yuan claim went viral on Oct. 27, tied to the same AI stock slide. Writer Rudy Fares checked the real numbers first. “The viral version is wrong. The real version is worse, and it took four months instead of one afternoon,” he wrote6. China's AI-linked shares had lost about $480 billion since July. The country's broader stock selloff reached $2.4 trillion since May, Yahoo Finance reported5. Beijing-based fund manager Dong Baozhen described the run-up that came before the fall. “The stock market later evolved into a speculative crazy bull. And now we see the bubble bursting,” he told the outlet.

Binance Reopens Its Vault, Piece by Piece

Binance's own recovery kept its pace while the China numbers argued with themselves. North Korea's TraderTraitor group drained $6.3 billion from the exchange's hot wallets on Oct. 29, the largest crypto theft on record, the FBI and Binance both said11. Binance chose to reopen withdrawals in stages rather than all at once.

A proof of reserves is a public accounting, a snapshot that lets a user check their own balance against what an exchange actually holds. Binance ran one for 10 tokens on Nov. 2, backed by a cryptographic proof. Co-chief executive Richard Teng explained the method plainly. “We've completed the latest Proof of Reserves verification, giving users another way to independently check that their assets are backed,” he said10. Co-founder Yi He gave the timeline for the harder math behind it. “It is currently estimated that generating the zero-knowledge proof will take about 40 to 50 hours after the snapshot is completed,” she said.

Binance had replenished 95% of the stolen funds by Nov. 1, drawing on its Secure Asset Fund for Users, its futures insurance fund and its own corporate treasury11. The remaining 5% sat in thinner, less liquid tokens that take longer to buy back. A second withdrawal phase opened at 04:00 UTC on Nov. 3, covering Binance Smart Chain, Ethereum, Solana, the XRP Ledger, Sui, Arbitrum, Optimism, Tron and Base, Cointelegraph reported8. Crypto.news counted 51 more tokens restored across Ethereum and Solana that day, 31 on Ethereum and 20 on Solana9.

The exchange used the same week to warn its own users. "Anyone promising to expedite it for a fee is scamming you," Binance said, after scammers began posing as support staff during the payout12. A theft that size tends to draw smaller thefts in its wake.

Liquid Network Pays Its Own Shortfall

A September 2026 exploit left Liquid Network's reserves thin. Elements, the software behind the Bitcoin sidechain, carried a bug that let an attacker drain the Federation's reserves on Sept. 6, 202613. Cached range proof checks let the exploiter mint roughly 4,000 LBTC with zero actual bitcoin behind it. The mint pulled the wallet from about 4,205 BTC down to 197 BTC. Its repair then ran slower and smaller than Binance's, with a clearer paper trail behind it.

The attacker returned 3,400 BTC on Sept. 7, 2026, a day after Blockstream patched the bridge nodes the exploit had used13. About 600 BTC stayed held back, as ransom. Blockstream refused to pay it. “We will not be a party to the precedent that open-source software developed for the good of the Bitcoin community should subject its developers to paying a ransom that far exceeds their economic participation,” the company said14.

Blockstream closed the 600 BTC shortfall itself instead, in small transfers spread across weeks. A test deposit of about 2.5 BTC arrived on Oct. 28, with Liquid Federation board member Samson Mow naming Blockstream as the funding source16. Another 300 BTC landed on Nov. 2, cutting the shortfall to 250 BTC, and a final 250 BTC closed it the same day13. The Federation posted the result on X on Nov. 3. “The Liquid Federation is pleased to announce that the network's bitcoin reserves have been fully restored, reestablishing 1:1 BTC backing for all LBTC,” the post read17.

      What to watch

Binance's next proof-of-reserves snapshot, due Wednesday, will show whether the remaining 5% closes on schedule10. A correction from either Crypto Rover or Hello Entrepreneurs would show whether Tuesday's post gets the same treatment CryptoTicker gave October's version16. The CSI 300's 13th week, due within days, will say whether China's real slide keeps outlasting the claims made about it2.
