“1inch named Hedi Navazan, a former HSBC financial crime executive, chief compliance officer on November 6, 2024, to run compliance for a protocol that runs on smart contracts rather than a head office. Can a decentralized exchange install a traditional compliance chief and stay decentralized?”

1inch Group announced on November 6, 2024, that it had appointed Hedi Navazan as its new chief compliance officer, a role over the exchange's legal and compliance work1. Her career spanned "the public sector, digital assets and traditional finance," the GlobeNewswire release said. It credited her with expertise in "permissionless security and regulatory compliance and combating financial crime". Compliance Week reported on November 7, 2024, that Navazan had worked at HSBC, where she "managed financial crime and regulatory teams across Europe"2.

      The move

Sergej Kunz, 1inch's co-founder, framed the hire around trust rather than enforcement alone. “1inch places a strong emphasis on user protection, building consumer trust and creating a lasting impact in the Web3 space,” Kunz said in the release1. He continued: “A strong foundation begins with a culture of security, compliance and a dedication to doing things the right way. We're thrilled to have Hedi on board, as her decade of experience and keen insight into evolving regulatory trends will be invaluable to our continued growth and long-term success,” Kunz said.

The release described Navazan's mandate as wide. She would "oversee a joint legal, security and compliance team," it said1. That team spans four functions: security, regulatory compliance, anti-money-laundering reporting, and client onboarding. Compliance Week added a detail the release left out. Navazan serves as vice chair of the Digital Asset Task Force. That task force sits inside the Global Coalition on Fighting Financial Crime, a body the World Economic Forum founded2.

      Before and after at 1inch

1inch's compliance structure before the hire went unnamed in either source, but the record shows the scale of the job Navazan took on instead, one officer running legal, security and compliance together1. Her own background came from HSBC, a traditional bank. The release described her career spanning "both the public sector, digital assets and traditional finance".

      What came next

Navazan still held the job nearly five months later. Decrypt quoted her on March 30, 2025, as the chief compliance officer at 1inch Labs, in a report on the claims portal that Kroll opened for creditors of Terraform Labs3. “While this may be a positive signal restoring trust in the community, this is absolutely a normal process in a financial market and services; we have seen these protections exist in TradFi,” Navazan told Decrypt. She said it was good that the crypto sector was learning from standards that already exist in traditional finance.
