“Binance's global exchange traded nearly $10 billion in 24 hours, more than five times rival Coinbase's volume, CoinDesk reported on March 11, 2026, the day Binance.US announced compliance lawyer Stephen Gregory as its chief executive. Will regulatory experience matter more than growth experience in the next phase of U.S. crypto trading?”

Binance.US named Stephen Gregory chief executive officer effective March 9, 2026. A Binance.US blog post announced it on March 11, 2026. Norman Reed, the man Gregory replaced, moved into an advisory role1. Gregory had run Currency.com, a digital finance platform, as its U.S. CEO. He steered it through a 2025 acquisition, and he had earlier held compliance jobs at Gemini and CEX.io.

      Why a compliance lawyer

Gregory built his career in digital-assets compliance. Binance.US framed the hire around that record and skipped the usual pitch about trading volume1. “I am honored to lead the Binance.US team as we write the next chapter for the best platform for U.S. crypto investors to buy, trade, and earn digital assets,” Gregory said in the announcement. CoinDesk wrote on March 11, 2026, that the appointment “places a legal and regulatory specialist in charge at a time when U.S. oversight of crypto companies remains a central issue for the industry”2.

Why does that framing matter now? Exchanges keep adding products. CoinDesk said American platforms have “raced to expand beyond digital assets, adding products such as tokenized stocks, prediction markets and traditional equities trading,” some through partnerships to trade blockchain versions of listed shares2. On that reading, a compliance lawyer at the top could help Binance.US add those products.

      Reed's record and Gregory's inheritance

Reed had guided Binance.US through what Gregory called a time of regulatory uncertainty. Binance.US kept him on as an adviser1. “I thank Norman for thoughtfully stewarding the company through a time of regulatory uncertainty and preparing us well to take advantage of the many opportunities that exist today,” Gregory said. Reed answered in the same post: “As we look to the next phase of growth for Binance.US, Stephen brings an entrepreneurial approach to leadership that I am confident will deliver for our customers in a meaningful way.”

Gregory tied the hire to Binance.US founder Changpeng Zhao. "The Binance.US brand is extremely powerful," he told CoinDesk, pointing to a founder “who has continuously advocated to make the U.S. the crypto capital of the world.”2 Binance.US had rolled out Boost, staking and a revamped referral program over the previous year. Binance.US said it would expand its Earn suite under Gregory and build gateways into decentralized finance1.

      What to watch

Binance's global exchange logged close to $10 billion in trading volume over 24 hours, CoinDesk reported on March 11, 2026. That topped the volume CoinGecko data showed for Coinbase over the same 24 hours by more than five times, a gap CoinDesk cited to size up the brand Gregory now draws on2. Watch whether Binance.US narrows any of that gap at home while it adds the tokenized-asset products CoinDesk described rivals chasing. A second signal is regulatory: whether Gregory's compliance background brings Binance.US new license approvals.
