“Bitfarms named energy banker Jonathan Mir chief financial officer on October 14, 2025, in a release that named Pennsylvania, Quebec and Central Washington for its next data centers. Does an energy financier's resume answer what the company plans to build?”

Bitfarms named Jonathan Mir chief financial officer effective October 27, 2025, the company said in a release filed with securities regulators on October 14, 20251. Mir succeeds Jeff Lucas, who had held the CFO seat for four years. Lucas is retiring, but he will stay on as a strategic adviser through the first quarter of 2026.

      The move

Bitfarms framed the hire around Mir's energy finance background. He spent most of his career at Lazard Inc., where he served as head of North American power, energy and infrastructure. Most recently he worked as a managing director in Bank of America's natural resources and energy transition group, according to the company's release1. Chief executive Ben Gagnon tied the hire to the company's buildout plans. “I am excited to have Jonathan, an impressive financial executive with extensive energy infrastructure-focused capital markets experience, join us as we execute on our HPC/AI growth strategy in Pennsylvania, Quebec and Central Washington,” Gagnon said.

Lucas, the outgoing CFO, used his exit statement to list what he had overseen. “During my tenure, the Company expanded its operations across four countries, raised and deployed hundreds of millions of dollars, closed multiple acquisitions including the largest public M&A deal between two public miners, and transitioned from a Bitcoin miner to an HPC/AI infrastructure pioneer,” he said1. He added that Bitfarms held approximately $330 million in cash and Bitcoin at the time of the announcement. Up to $250 million more was available for its Panther Creek Campus project. Panabee's summary of the filing matched those same two figures2.

      Bitfarms before and after

Before the announcement, Bitfarms called itself a North American energy and digital infrastructure company already pivoting from Bitcoin mining toward hosting for high-performance computing1. Its energy pipeline ran 1.3 gigawatts, more than 80 percent of it based in the United States. Lucas had guided the finance side of that shift since 2021. After the hire, Mir inherited a company mid-transition. The release said his new work would draw on public and private equity and debt financings for infrastructure projects.

      What to watch

Mir's record to watch is financing activity tied to the three regions Gagnon named. A financing round, a bond sale or a project-facility drawdown for the Panther Creek Campus would be one marker. So would a similar deal in Pennsylvania, Quebec or Central Washington. Either would show whether Mir's energy infrastructure background translates into capital Bitfarms can deploy. Lucas's advisory role runs through the first quarter of 2026. What Bitfarms reports once that period ends is a second fact worth tracking.
