The hire
CoinDesk framed the appointment around the job ahead of Horowitz. “Cryptocurrency custodian BitGo has hired Coinbase's former chief compliance officer to lead its compliance and anti-money laundering (AML) programs,” the outlet wrote2. Horowitz described the demand he saw from the market he would now serve. “Banks and institutional investors are looking for a regulated and independent custody solution provider to safely store their crypto,” he told CoinDesk in an email.
BitGo's own post named the regulatory range the company wanted Horowitz to cover. “Jeff brings knowledge from both traditional financial services and crypto markets to help us navigate state, federal and international policies,” the company wrote1. CoinDesk added a detail about his record. Horowitz had co-chaired the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association's anti-money-laundering committee2. That post put him among the people who write the rules banks ask custodians to follow.
A settlement sat behind the hire
CoinDesk linked the appointment to a penalty from the prior month. The U.S. Treasury Department announced in December 2020 that BitGo agreed to pay $93,8302. The sum settled 183 "apparent violations" of multiple sanctions programs, the outlet reported. BitGo hired Horowitz on Jan. 13, 2021, five weeks after the Treasury made the settlement public. The dollar figure looked modest. Its count of 183 separate violations pointed to a screening gap wider than one missed transaction, the kind of pattern a chief compliance officer gets hired to close.
What came next
Horowitz served as BitGo's chief compliance officer from Jan. 13, 2021, until his retirement took effect on June 19, 2026, after five years and five months in the role13. BitGo announced the retirement on June 18, 2026, and called it an orderly transition, separate from any dispute over the company's operations, policies or practices.
