The move
Circle's announcement called Christman "a respected and well-known Talent leader in the high-growth technology sector" with more than two decades of experience scaling teams1. Elisabeth Carpenter, Circle's chief operating officer, tied the hire to the company's growth plans. "Everything we do at Circle starts and ends with people," Carpenter said. “Brian brings a deep appreciation for what we are building, strong alignment with our values, and the skills and experience necessary to strengthen and prepare our people for the next phase of work”. Christman pointed to Circle's culture. “I'm drawn to Circle's mission-driven culture and the opportunity to drive the company forward by elevating employees and their careers,” he said. Citybiz published its own report the same day, Jan. 24, 2023, repeating Circle's account of his background2.
Christman's path to Circle
Christman spent several years at Etsy as senior vice president of people and workplace, driving talent strategy and engagement programs, Circle's release said1. Earlier he held talent leadership roles at Gilt Group and Sirius XM. His career began in human resource operations at AOL, Excel Partners and DoubleClick. He graduated from Villanova University with a degree in human services. At Transfix, he and his team won Ragan's Platinum HR Award for Team of the Year, the release noted.
What came next
Christman was still Circle's Chief People Officer when he joined a Workday podcast published Dec. 4, 2024, to discuss talent strategy in financial services3. By then Circle had grown to about a thousand employees spread across 14 countries, up from a few hundred a few years before, he said. “We're also very geographically diverse, so we have employees in every region of the world,” Christman said on the podcast.
