“Edward McGee left Grayscale as chief financial officer on July 2, 2026, after seven years, and two finance executives split his job between them on an interim basis. Does splitting one role answer who runs Grayscale's finances next?”

Grayscale Investments disclosed in a July 2, 2026 SEC filing that chief financial officer Edward McGee had stepped down1. The exit took effect on July 2. Kathryn Masci and Daniel Plourde, both senior vice presidents of finance, took over as co-chief financial officers on an interim basis, the filing said. CoinDesk reported on July 9 that McGee's exit followed seven years with the company2.

      The move

Grayscale's own filing stated plainly why McGee left. “Mr. McGee is stepping down for personal reasons and not due to any disagreement with the Company or any matter relating to Grayscale's operations, policies or practices,” the filing said. “He leaves the Company on good terms and Grayscale thanks him for his 7 years of service”1. CoinDesk reported that McGee was “the second senior executive to leave Grayscale in recent months, following the departure of Managing Director and Head of Distribution and Partnerships John Hoffman to Ondo Finance”2.

A Grayscale Investments spokesperson gave CoinDesk the firm's read on its own direction. “Strategy remains unchanged as we continue to build on our success as the world's largest digital asset-focused investment platform,” the spokesperson said2.

      Grayscale before and after

McGee had held three titles before he left. He was chief financial officer, principal financial and accounting officer, and a member of Grayscale's board of managers, the SEC filing said1. Masci had served as senior vice president of finance since January 2026. She had been with Grayscale since May 2020, after earlier roles at Garrison Capital, Pzena Investment Management, and Ernst & Young. Plourde joined Grayscale as a vice president in September 2022 and became senior vice president of finance in January 2026. He carries more than 20 years of financial services experience, including roles at Gabelli Asset Management and State Street Global Advisors. CoinDesk reported that the changes came as Grayscale had delayed plans for a U.S. IPO amid market conditions2.

      What to watch

Masci and Plourde hold the co-chief financial officer title on an interim basis. A permanent appointment would show whether Grayscale keeps one of them or hires from outside1. CoinDesk named McGee the second senior departure after Hoffman's exit to Ondo Finance2. A third departure would mark a pattern instead of a single resignation. Grayscale's delayed IPO plans give a second marker. A renewed filing or a fresh timeline would show whether the finance changes settled the firm's near-term strategy.
