“Grayscale named founder Barry Silbert board chairman on Aug. 4, 2025, less than two years after he resigned the post, and weeks after the firm confidentially filed to go public. Does a founder's return read as confidence or as unfinished business?”

Grayscale Investments named founder Barry Silbert its board chairman in a press release dated Aug. 4, 2025. He replaced Mark Shifke, who stayed on as a board member1. The board grew to five seats with the change. Grayscale paired the appointment with four executive hires reporting to Chief Executive Officer Peter Mintzberg, including chief operating officer Diana Zhang.

      The move

Silbert also serves as founder and chief executive of Digital Currency Group. He called the timing significant. “I'm honored to rejoin the Grayscale board at a defining moment for both the company and the broader digital asset ecosystem,” Silbert said. “When I founded Grayscale in 2013, we saw an enormous opportunity to pioneer a new model for accessing and investing in digital assets, and to build the operational infrastructure that investors would ultimately demand. Today, I continue to have deep conviction in the company's long-term positioning and in the leadership team guiding it forward.”1 Mintzberg paired the chairmanship with three more hires: Ramona Boston as chief marketing officer, Andrea Williams as chief communications officer and Maxwell Rosenthal as chief human resources officer. “This blend of institutional rigor and entrepreneurial drive shapes every aspect of how we operate at Grayscale,” Mintzberg said.

Before and after on the board

Shifke had held the chairman's seat since Silbert's 2023 exit. The Block reported that Silbert resigned as chairman at the end of 2023. That was weeks ahead of the Securities and Exchange Commission's Jan. 10, 2024, deadline to rule on spot bitcoin ETF applications, including Grayscale's own GBTC conversion2. His exit coincided with a lawsuit the New York Attorney General filed against Digital Currency Group over the collapse of its lending arm Genesis. That complaint named Silbert personally, The Block reported. By Aug. 4, 2025, Grayscale managed more than $35 billion in assets across more than three dozen products, the release said1. The Block reported that the appointments followed a confidential filing Grayscale made in July 2025 for a U.S. initial public offering.

      What came next

Silbert's return was tied to that planned listing, and the listing slowed down later. CoinDesk reported on May 28, 2026, that Grayscale had paused its IPO preparations. Grayscale was unlikely to restart the process before the fourth quarter of 20263. That came from a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity, CoinDesk said. A Grayscale spokesperson told CoinDesk the firm was limited in what it could say "due to the SEC-mandated quiet period".
