“Peter Mintzberg, a Goldman Sachs strategist with two decades at traditional asset managers, was named chief executive of crypto asset manager Grayscale on May 20, 2024. Does a Wall Street résumé answer what a crypto firm needs most?”

Grayscale Investments named Peter Mintzberg its chief executive on May 20, 20241. His start date was set for August 15, with a seat on the firm's board attached to the role. Mintzberg came from Goldman Sachs, where he led strategy for asset and wealth management, Cointelegraph reported on May 20, 20242. He succeeded Michael Sonnenshein, who had led Grayscale since January 2021.

      The move

Barry Silbert, founder and chief executive of parent company Digital Currency Group, announced the hire himself. “As we position Grayscale for its next phase of growth, excited to welcome Peter Mintzberg as Grayscale's CEO, effective August 15. Joining from Goldman Sachs, Peter has 20+ years of experience across prominent asset managers, including BlackRock, OppenheimerFunds & Invesco,” Silbert wrote in a May 20 post on X, cited by Cointelegraph2. Grayscale's own release carried a similar line from Silbert. “Peter is an exceptional strategic leader with global expertise across the most prominent asset managers, which are critical ingredients as we position Grayscale for its next phase of growth,” he said1.

Mintzberg explained his own reason for the move. “I've long admired Grayscale's position as the leading crypto asset management firm, and I am honored to join the most talented and pioneering team in the business. This is an exciting time in Grayscale's history as it continues to capitalize on the unprecedented momentum in the asset class,” he said1.

      Grayscale before and after

Mintzberg spent more than two decades at BlackRock, OppenheimerFunds, and Invesco in strategy and investor relations roles before Goldman Sachs, Grayscale's release said1. He started his career at McKinsey & Co., working in New York, San Francisco, and São Paulo. An engineering degree from the Universidade Federal Rio de Janeiro and an MBA from Harvard round out his résumé. At the time of his hire, Grayscale had launched nineteen crypto investment products and managed roughly $30 billion in assets.

      What came next

Mintzberg still ran Grayscale in August 2026, more than two years later. He bylined an op-ed for Fortune Crypto published August 27, 2026, where his author bio named him "CEO of Grayscale Investments, a leading digital asset-focused investment platform"3. The piece argued that market watchers were missing the point about a thaw in the broader crypto downturn. That byline placed Mintzberg as Grayscale's public voice on market conditions deep into his tenure.
