The move
Sonnenshein described the promotion himself. “Working at Grayscale over the last seven years has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I am extremely grateful for the honor to assume the Chief Executive position at the firm, and I thank Barry for his vision, leadership, and support,” Sonnenshein said1. Silbert credited him for the firm's growth. “That accomplishment would not have been possible without Michael's unrelenting passion for our business and his commitment to making the digital currency asset class available to a broader base of investors,” Silbert said.
CryptoPotato quoted Sonnenshein's own ambition for the brand. He said he wanted “to make Grayscale synonymous with digital investing like PIMCO is with fixed income and Vanguard is with index funds”2.
Grayscale before and after
Sonnenshein joined Grayscale in 2014 as an account executive, then moved into sales leadership before becoming managing director in January 2018, the company's own release said1. Before Grayscale, he had worked at JPMorgan, Barclays, and Bank of America. As CEO, Grayscale said he would set the firm's strategic direction, with plans to double staff in 2021 and launch multiple new products.
What came next
Sonnenshein ran Grayscale for more than three years. Cointelegraph reported on May 20, 2024, that he had “stepped down from his role as the CEO of Grayscale Investments LLC”3. Former Goldman Sachs executive Peter Mintzberg was set to replace him, effective August 15 of that year. Grayscale's chief financial officer, Edward McGee, led the firm in the gap between the two CEOs, Cointelegraph reported. By then, Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust held over 287,801 bitcoin, the largest spot Bitcoin ETF by on-chain holdings at the time, the outlet reported.
