“Grayscale named Diana Zhang, a Bridgewater Associates veteran of more than a decade who was then BlockTower Capital's chief operating officer, its own chief operating officer on April 9, 2025. Does more than a decade of traditional asset management experience translate into running a crypto-focused platform?”

Grayscale Investments named Diana Zhang chief operating officer in a press release dated April 9, 2025. Her start date was set for May 6, 20251. Zhang succeeded Hugh Ross, who had served as the firm's chief operating officer since 2021. She reports to Grayscale Chief Executive Officer Peter Mintzberg.

      The move

Mintzberg framed the hire around Zhang's résumé. The release said she spent more than a decade at Bridgewater Associates, where she held roles including deputy to the co-chief executive and chief operating officer of investment research1. She joined Grayscale directly from BlockTower Capital, a digital asset investment firm, where she served as chief operating officer, The Block reported2. “Diana is a rare talent, bringing a combination of relevant experience, track record, and vision to Grayscale from some of the leading asset management and investing firms, including those specializing in cryptocurrency and blockchain-related assets,” Mintzberg said. Zhang described her own view of the moment. “This is an exciting time for the crypto asset management industry, and Grayscale is well-positioned for continued success,” Zhang said. “I look forward to working with the talented team to drive innovation, deliver exceptional value to our clients, and set the standard for excellence and pioneering leadership in the market.”

      Before and after at Grayscale

Ross had run Grayscale's operations since 2021. Mintzberg credited that four-year run with launching "the first digital asset exchange-traded products in the industry"1. Ross stayed through the handoff period. Mintzberg said he would "provide valuable support during the transition". Grayscale had launched more than thirty crypto products over the prior decade at the time of Zhang's hire, the release said. The Block reported that Zhang's job included expanding partnerships with Grayscale's institutional clients2.

      What came next

On Aug. 4, 2025, four months after Zhang's hire, Grayscale widened its executive bench again. That release named three more chiefs: Ramona Boston in marketing, Andrea Williams in communications and Maxwell Rosenthal in human resources3. The same release returned founder Barry Silbert to the board as chairman. All four executives the release listed, Zhang among them, reported to Mintzberg. Grayscale managed more than $35 billion in assets across more than three dozen products, the release said. Grayscale's IPO plans slowed later. CoinDesk reported on May 28, 2026, that Grayscale had paused its IPO work4. Someone with knowledge of the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a restart was unlikely before the fourth quarter of 2026. A Grayscale spokesperson told CoinDesk the firm was limited in what it could say "due to the SEC-mandated quiet period". The August 4, 2025 release still listed Zhang among the executives reporting to Mintzberg.
