Jump Trading Group introduced its new cryptocurrency and blockchain division, Jump Crypto, in a blog post dated Sept. 13, 2021, and signed by Kanav Kariya1. The TRADE reported on Sept. 15, 2021, that Kariya had been appointed the division's president2. Kariya had joined Jump in 2017 as a software engineering intern. He spent four years rising through several roles, The TRADE wrote, most recently as director of strategic initiatives for digital assets. A quantitative researcher post at the firm came earlier in that climb.

The move
Kariya's appointment followed an acquisition. The TRADE reported that Jump Trading Group had bought Certus One, a firm that validates distributed ledger infrastructure, the prior month2. Jump Crypto's own blog post called the division "a project six years in the making at Jump Trading Group." It traced the division's roots to an intern project at the firm's research lab at the University of Illinois1. Kariya explained the thinking behind one of that lab's bets, the price oracle network Pyth. "Blockchains enable global consensus amongst mutually distrusting parties," he said. “They empower developers to create open applications that codify the rules and outcomes of participation for all parties. Pyth is a great example of this, as a trustless system for data producers to independently contribute information to a shared piece of decentralised infrastructure,” Kariya said.
Jump Crypto before and after
Before the formal launch, Jump Trading Group was a research-driven quantitative trading firm. Jump Trading Group had more than 1,000 employees globally and ranked among the largest traders by volume across traditional asset classes, the blog post said1. Dave Olsen, president and chief investment officer of Jump Trading Group, framed what the new division was meant to reach beyond crypto itself. “Having been at the forefront of development in digital assets and DeFi, we believe there is substantial opportunity for industries including healthcare, real estate and social media to leverage the blockchain to transfer information in a trusted, efficient manner,” Olsen said2. The TRADE named 11 trading firms that had joined the Pyth Network alongside Jump in the months before the launch, among them Jane Street, Virtu Financial and Hudson River Trading.
What came next
Kariya ran Jump Crypto for just under three years. He announced his departure on X on June 24, 2024, calling it his "last day at Jump"3. CoinDesk reported the news on June 24, 2024. Its report noted that the exit followed a Fortune report of a Commodity Futures Trading Commission investigation into the firm's crypto dealings. CoinDesk also reported that the Wormhole bridge Jump backed had been hacked for more than $300 million in 2022. U.S. officials said Jump earned more than $1 billion trading around the Terra ecosystem before it collapsed, according to CoinDesk.
