“Kanav Kariya called June 24, 2024, his last day at Jump Trading, a moment of both a heavy heart and great excitement, days after Fortune reported a federal regulator was investigating the firm's crypto trading. Did the investigation decide his timing more than his own words did?”

Kanav Kariya posted on X that June 24, 2024, was his last day as president of Jump Crypto. "Today marks the end of an incredible personal journey for me," he wrote. “It's my last day at Jump, a moment I'm receiving with both a heavy heart and great excitement about the road ahead. I'm leaving with a set of awesome relationships and unique, invaluable and shaping experiences.”1 CoinDesk reported on June 24, 2024, that Kariya had ascended from an intern to the head of Jump Trading's cryptocurrency business by age 252.

      The move

CoinDesk placed the exit after a Fortune report on a Commodity Futures Trading Commission investigation into Jump Trading. Fortune had reported that investigation the week before2. Kariya's own post left the reason for his departure to others to explain. He wrote only that he planned to "stay engaged with the portfolio companies" he had worked with most closely and hoped to “take some time to process the unbelievably eventful few years we've had”.

      Jump Crypto before and after

CoinDesk's report traced two crises that unfolded on Kariya's watch. The Wormhole bridge that Jump backed was hacked for more than $300 million in early 2022, and Jump replenished the losses from its own funds, CoinDesk reported2. Do Kwon's Terra and Luna project collapsed the same year. That collapse led to criminal charges against Kwon, and U.S. officials said Jump earned more than $1 billion from the Terra ecosystem before it fell apart, according to CoinDesk. Kariya's appointment as president had been announced in 2021. He left the role in his late twenties, CoinDesk reported.

      What came next

Fortune reported on July 11, 2024, that Kariya and Jump co-founder Bill DiSomma had been deposed over a secret deal Jump struck to prop up the stablecoin TerraUSD. Securities and Exchange Commission prosecutors ran that deposition. The magazine wrote that "they both pleaded the Fifth"3. People close to Kariya told Fortune that both sides had "long been planning his exit." His future in crypto looked uncertain, the magazine wrote, even as he said he would stay "engaged" with portfolio companies. Terraform Labs' court-appointed plan administrator later sued Jump Trading for $4 billion in federal court in Illinois. The suit named Kariya personally alongside DiSomma, a report TradingView carried from The Wall Street Journal said4.
