“Riot Platforms named Jason Chung to succeed Colin Yee as chief financial officer on January 2, 2026, and dropped a bitcoin yield metric from its executive pay plan in favor of data center targets, CFO Dive reported. Can a new scoreboard change how a bitcoin miner's finance chief runs a data center build?”

Riot Platforms announced on January 2, 2026, that Jason Chung would become chief financial officer, effective March 1, 20261. He was to succeed Colin Yee, who had held the seat since 2022. Chung would keep his current titles, corporate development and investor relations, and adds the finance organization on top.

      The move

Yee was to stay through March 1, 2026, then move into a senior advisor role, Riot's release said1. “I'm proud of the resilient financial platform we have built at Riot,” Yee said. “This transition represents a natural evolution for the Company, and I look forward to ensuring a smooth handover and continuing to support the team in my new Senior Advisor role,” he said. Jason Les, Riot's chief executive, thanked Yee for "strengthening Riot's financial foundation" and for "developing our internal reporting infrastructure".

CFO Dive reported on January 5, 2026 that Riot Platforms paired the appointment with a rewrite of its own pay plan. The outlet wrote that Riot Platforms “eliminated a 'bitcoin yield' metric previously included as part of its long-term incentive plan award.” It quoted the company's filing calling the shift part of a focus "on the Company's strategic focus on data center development"2.

      Before and after at Riot

Riot Platforms started 2026 as a bitcoin miner leaning into AI infrastructure. Yee ran its finance function for three years. Les credited that stretch with building "our internal reporting infrastructure" during what he called "key phases of growth"1. Chung moves up from inside the company. He led Riot's capital markets strategy, investor relations and mergers work, the release said. CFO Dive reported he joined Riot's corporate development role in May 2022, after nearly a decade at Societe Generale and time at Nomura2. His base salary rises from $500,000 to $550,000 with the new title, the outlet reported, citing Riot's securities filing.

      What to watch

Riot's compensation plan now points to two new numbers: data center revenue and data center net operating income, both triggered once Riot signs its first tenant, CFO Dive reported2. The rest of 2026 will show whether Riot signs that first data center tenant, the event that switches on the new pay metrics for Chung and the rest of Riot's executives.
