“Riot Platforms handed its finance chair to an internal dealmaker on Jan. 2, 2026, and raised his base salary from $500,000 to $550,000 in the same filing. Does promoting from inside signal confidence in the data center bet built around him?”

Riot Platforms, Inc. named Jason Chung chief financial officer on Jan. 2, 2026. He takes the seat on March 1, succeeding Colin Yee after three years in the role, the company said in a press release1.

A Corporate Development Chief Moves to Finance

Chung led Riot's corporate development and strategy team as executive vice president. The company said he keeps that job, plus investor relations, while taking charge of finance1. CFO Dive reported a securities filing tied to the move raises Chung's base salary from $500,000 to $550,000 once he becomes CFO2.

Jason Les, Riot's chief executive, framed the choice around capital strategy. "I am pleased to appoint Jason Chung as Riot's next CFO," Les said. “His extensive experience and solid track record of delivering value-creating results, combined with his expertise in capital markets and corporate development, make him the ideal leader to guide our capital allocation strategy as we execute on our ambitious growth plans”1.

Chung answered the appointment in his own words. “I am honored to step into the CFO role at such a transformative time for Riot,” Chung said. “Having led our corporate development efforts, I see a tremendous opportunity to further integrate our financial discipline with our growth ambitions in digital infrastructure”1.

Pay Plan Turns Toward Data Centers as Yee Steps Back

Yee has served as CFO since 2022. He moves to a senior advisor role on March 1 to support what the release called "strategic continuity"1. CFO Dive reported the compensation committee dropped a bitcoin-yield metric from its 2026 incentive plan that same week. Riot swapped in two new metrics tied to data center revenue and operating income2.

      What to watch

Riot's 2026 incentive plan ties executive pay to data center milestones, so the next production update will show whether Chung's finance team hits them. A signed tenant at the Corsicana site would mark the first real test of the pivot built around his promotion.
