The move
Chief executive Adam Sullivan named the moment Elms arrives into. “Jay joins Core Scientific at an important moment as we enter our next phase of growth,” Sullivan said. “His deep customer relationship experience in the data center industry will be instrumental in ensuring the success of our existing customers while aligning our commercial strategy with our site selection, development and construction capabilities.”1
Elms described what drew him to the company in the same release. “Core Scientific has distinguished itself by delivering complex, AI-ready digital infrastructure at scale,” he said. “The Company combines a strong power portfolio with the development and operational capabilities customers need to bring critical infrastructure online. I look forward to scaling customer relationships and enhancing the customer experience.”1
citybiz reported the hire on September 25, 2026, the same day as the release2. The appointment comes as Core Scientific shifts its business toward purpose-built data centers for high-density computing, citybiz wrote. Commercial execution now matters more, the outlet said, for coordinating customers, site development and construction.
Elms' record before Core Scientific
Before CyrusOne, Elms spent nearly seven years at NTT Global Data Centers Americas, the release said1. He held the title of vice president of global sales there. His work included sales to hyperscale and wholesale customers. Earlier in his career, he held sales roles at View, Schneider Electric and Siemens. Elms holds an MBA in finance from the SMU Cox School of Business and a bachelor's degree in construction science from Texas A&M University.
citybiz wrote that Elms' time at NTT gave him experience that “directly overlaps with the types of large-scale infrastructure deployments Core Scientific is pursuing”2. Core Scientific built its power and data center sites around cryptocurrency mining, the outlet noted. Those assets now serve AI and other high-density computing work, the outlet wrote. citybiz called large blocks of available electricity "one of the most constrained resources in the data center market". Most of its revenue now comes from colocation services, the company's own release said1. Mining still brings in the rest. Some of that comes from assets Core Scientific mines itself, and some from hosting other miners.
What to watch
Elms faces a plain test. Can he match Core Scientific's power-rich, former mining sites, spread across seven states from Texas to North Dakota, to the hyperscale and wholesale customers who need large blocks of computing capacity now that AI demand has made that kind of site hard to find? The harder part comes after a deal closes. citybiz wrote that for AI infrastructure providers, “delays in any part of that process can affect when contracted capacity begins generating revenue”2. Core Scientific's quarterly filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission will show whether new colocation customers or converted sites follow his arrival.
