Strategy Buys More Bitcoin as MSCI Mulls Exclusion

Strategy added 267 Bitcoin this week, even as MSCI's new index rules threaten to drop it.

“Strategy bought 267 more bitcoin last week and tripled its buyback room to $3 billion, even while its own spare cash fell 72 percent in seven weeks. Does a shrinking cash pile still prove Strategy's buying plan works?”

Michael Saylor posted a short update on X on Oct. 19, 2026. Strategy had bought 267 more bitcoin and repurchased $193 million of STRC preferred shares1. STRC pays a fixed dividend, and Strategy sells it to raise cash while keeping its bitcoin. Strategy's bitcoin stash reached 848,517 coins, a new high. Saylor also raised Strategy's buyback program from $2 billion to $3 billion. The timing stood out. MSCI had finalized new index rules four days earlier that could drop Strategy from its benchmarks3. Saylor bought anyway.

“Strategy has repurchased $193M of $STRC and acquired 267 $BTC. As of 10/18/26, we hold 848,517 BTC and $5.3B of USD Assets. We have also increased the size of our Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program from $2.0B to $3.0B,” Saylor wrote on X1. Saylor named the shares he sold and the bitcoin he bought in one breath. He left MSCI's rule out of the post entirely.

A Week of Buying, Funded by New Shares

Strategy's 267 bitcoin cost $22.1 million, an average of $82,900 a coin2. The company bought them between Oct. 12 and Oct. 18. It paid for them by selling new shares. Strategy sold 140,872 of its own shares for about $22 million. That sale carried the week's bitcoin bill, separate from its cash reserves.

Its total stash grew to 848,517 BTC2. The company has spent $64.02 billion on bitcoin since it started buying, for an average cost of $75,446 a coin. That $82,900 sits well above Strategy's own average cost. Bitcoin has climbed a long way since Strategy's early buys.

The company also bought back its own preferred stock. It repurchased 1,938,780 STRC shares for $193.1 million2. Strategy's board raised the repurchase program's ceiling from $2 billion to $3 billion the same day. About $1.16 billion of that room remains unused.

Why MSCI Wants Companies Like Strategy Out

MSCI finalized a new index rule on Oct. 15, 20263. The rule starts with one screen: does the company hold real operating assets? A company that fails goes on to five financial ratios11. Four red flags or more make it ineligible for MSCI's indexes. The change replaces an older rule that flagged any company holding more than half its assets in digital coins.

The index provider explained the design choice. “To reduce index turnover, buffers will apply to both the eligibility thresholds of the financial ratios and the timing of index inclusion and removal,” MSCI said3.

Strategy sits at the center of that list3. MSCI also named Metaplanet, Yellow Cake and the Ethereum treasury firm SharpLink as companies at risk. The final list of excluded names comes out Nov. 11. Any change takes effect after the market closes on Nov. 3011.

Strategy's stock already felt the new rule. Its shares fell 9.56 percent to close at $136.83 on Oct. 16, the day after MSCI's announcement4. They rose 2.09 percent to $139.69 in Monday's premarket trading, after Saylor's bitcoin post5.

Saylor and Le Call the Risk Small

Strategy's own letter to MSCI, filed in September, made its case plain. “If adopted, the proposal would have no meaningful impact on Strategy's business, but it would profoundly harm MSCI's reputation as a reliable and neutral index provider,” the company wrote3.

Saylor made a similar point to Bloomberg on Oct. 136. He called MSCI's approach a "bad precedent" for the industry. Saylor said the passive money MSCI controls is small next to Strategy's full market value.

Chief executive Phong Le made the same point from a different angle7. He called MSCI's move "ill-advised" and said the lost index weight would be "immaterial" to Strategy's price.

The Funding Channel MSCI Could Still Pinch

JPMorgan sees a bigger number than Le does8. Its analysts estimate Strategy's removal from MSCI's indexes could trigger $2.8 billion in forced selling by passive funds. That estimate has held steady since MSCI first floated the rule.

Adam Livingston, an analyst who tracks Strategy's finances closely, takes the newer rule more seriously than the company does10. “The revised methodology represents a more credible threat than MSCI's earlier crypto-specific effort because it applies a general financial framework rather than singling out Bitcoin treasury companies,” he wrote.

His point reaches past the index itself. Strategy funds most of its bitcoin buying by selling new MSTR shares, as this week's purchase shows2. A rule that weakens the stock's price can shrink that channel too, regardless of passive-fund weight11.

The company's own cash points to the same strain9. Strategy's discretionary cash fell 72 percent in seven weeks, from $1.61 billion on Aug. 30 to $447.3 million on Oct. 18. That is the reserve Strategy taps when new stock sales slow down.

      Two Numbers, One Open Question

Strategy and JPMorgan are both doing math, just on different parts of the company8. Le's math counts index weight alone, a small slice of Strategy's shares7. JPMorgan's math counts forced selling across every fund that tracks MSCI. Both numbers can be true at once.

Watch the cash alongside the coin count. A pause in buying would say MSCI's threat finally slowed the flow of new shares. Another purchase next week would say the threat changed little so far9.

      By the numbers

      • Strategy bought 267 bitcoin for $22.1 million, an average of $82,900 a coin, between Oct. 12 and Oct. 18, 20262.
      • Its total stash reached 848,517 BTC, bought for $64.02 billion in all2.
      • The STRC buyback program grew from $2 billion to $3 billion on Oct. 192.
      • Strategy's discretionary cash fell 72 percent since Aug. 30, to $447.3 million on Oct. 189.
      • MSTR stock fell 9.56 percent on Oct. 16, the day after MSCI's rule, then rose 2.09 percent on Oct. 1945.
      • JPMorgan estimates a Strategy exclusion could force $2.8 billion in passive selling8.
      • MSCI will publish its final list of excluded companies on Nov. 11, 20263.

      What to watch

Strategy's next weekly filing will show whether the buying continues at the same pace2. MSCI's final list, due Nov. 11, will confirm whether Strategy actually loses its spot3. The Nov. 30 effective date gives passive funds a known day to act, if they do11. Strategy's Oct. 29 earnings call could update the cash figures this piece cites9.
