Strive bought 1,223 more bitcoin last week. The firm paid an average of $81,734 a coin, a total near $100 million1. That purchase pushed Strive's bitcoin stash to 36,818 BTC. Chief executive Matt Cole posted the figures on X on Oct. 195. That same day, Tether's chief executive answered a harder question. Paolo Ardoino spent that day defending Tether's record on freezing wallets tied to Iran3. Senate staff had flagged a nine-month delay on 34 addresses linked to Hezbollah funding. Strive grew its bitcoin pile in public. Tether defended its compliance record in public. Both picked the same day to make their case.
Four Days, 1,223 More Bitcoin
Strive's buying ran from Wednesday to Friday, Oct. 14 to Oct. 16, at an average of $81,734 a coin1. The firm picked up 1,223 BTC in that window. Add an earlier purchase of 2,822 BTC that same week, and the week's total reached 4,045 new coins. That pushed Strive's stash from roughly 32,773 BTC to 36,818 BTC.
The purchase puts Strive fourth among public companies that hold bitcoin1. Strategy holds 848,517 BTC, far ahead of the rest of the field. Metaplanet holds 44,000 BTC, and Twenty One holds 43,514 BTC. MARA, a bitcoin miner, sits just behind Strive at 35,577 BTC. Cole has said he wants Strive to finish the year as the second-largest holder on that list.

Strive paid for the spree with more than cash. Warrant exercises brought in $369.2 million1. A new class of preferred shares, called SATS, is set to raise about $630 million when its offering settles Tuesday. Strive's Class A share count grew by 13.7 million shares to cover the cost. Strive still holds $317.5 million in cash, as of Oct. 16.
News of the purchase spread fast. Ten outlets wrote up Strive's buy within a day of Cole's post9. Bloomingbit was among them, confirming the same price and holdings total2. Cole framed the number himself. “Last Wed-Fri, Strive acquired 1,223 BTC at an average cost of $81,734 per bitcoin, bringing holdings to ₿36,818. SATS IPO proceeds settle this Tuesday,” he wrote on X5. The post drew 2,043 likes by 13:13 UTC on Oct. 20.
The Amplification Bet
Cole's case for buying fast rests on a model he calls the Amplification Ratio6. The idea measures how much Strive's setup can multiply bitcoin's own return for owners. Cole posted his reasoning hours before the week's purchases became public. “I use long-term money-supply trends as an important factor in assessing the cost of capital we should be willing to underwrite to amplify Bitcoin,” he wrote.
Read plainly, Cole's bet favors patience over caution. He wants Strive buying through every cycle, easy or hard. The math behind it still depends on markets staying open for Strive's own stock and preferred shares.
A Risk Analyst Flags the Same Structure
Greg Cipolaro runs research at NYDIG, a bitcoin finance firm10. He has studied the preferred-share structure behind Strive's SATS raise. Strategy uses a similar design for its own STRC shares. Cipolaro argues the real risk sits somewhere else, away from whether dividends get paid on time. “The appropriate way to assess risk in STRC and SATA is through the lens of governance and subordination rather than focusing solely on payment risk,” he wrote.
Cipolaro's research found both SATA and STRC can trade below face value when bitcoin drops sharply10. When that happens, issuing new preferred shares stops making financial sense. New sales become "uneconomic, limiting the ability to raise capital and slowing the flywheel," he wrote. Strive's SATS offering, still settling this week, carries the same structure he flagged seven months earlier.
Tether Answers a Senate Report With Its Own Math
Tether's test traces to a Senate investigation into Iran's use of crypto3. Investigators found Israel's National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing had flagged 39 wallets in June 2023. The wallets tied to a Hezbollah financier named Tawfiq Muhammad Sa'id al-Law. Tether froze five of those wallets right away. The other 34 stayed open until March 2024. More than $34.6 million in USDT moved out of them during that gap. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the panel's ranking Democrat, urged the Treasury and Justice departments in late September to dig further into Tether's controls.

Blumenthal's questions reach beyond Tether itself11. He is pressing on Tether's ties to Cantor Fitzgerald, a Wall Street firm. Cantor Fitzgerald owns 5 percent of Tether. It also manages more than $100 billion of Tether's reserves. Separate Senate findings tied more than $603 million in USDT to two sanctioned Iranian oil smugglers. That money moved through networks connected to Hezbollah and Houthi financing. Tether says it helped freeze roughly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT during 2026. That figure still trails the $603 million the two smugglers alone moved.

Ardoino answered Blumenthal directly on X the same day Cole posted his own numbers7. “Senator Blumenthal's 'analysis' of Tether's sanctions report misses that, since 2023, Tether froze on average 4 weeks prior to OFAC & NBCTF official sanction designation and for 99% of the times Tether froze the reported addresses before Chainalysis labelled them,” he wrote. The post drew 191 likes within hours.
Tether's broader defense leans on numbers from TRM Labs, a blockchain analytics firm4. Iran-linked wallets made up 67 percent of USDT's share of that traffic in 2025. By August 2026, that share had fallen to 14 percent. Ardoino says total Iran-linked stablecoin volume fell 94 percent since 2023, with $550 million frozen this year alone.

The rebuttal arrives inside a bigger fight4. Bo Hines, whose firm took $6.3 million from Tether while he helped shape federal stablecoin rules, keeps regulators watching Tether closely. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington is targeting roughly $1 billion in Iran-linked crypto assets for seizure. The department calls the effort Operation Economic Outcast.

Two Companies, Two Kinds of Proof
Strive's case rests on a number anyone can check. Its bitcoin stack either grows or stays flat, and Monday's filings will say which. Tether's case rests on a different kind of proof, built from timestamps on its own freeze actions. Ardoino's math holds if Chainalysis and OFAC data back his four-week average. Blumenthal's case holds if the delay proves typical across every wallet, a pattern rather than one lapse.
Both stories share one thread. Markets reward the number you can post today, and discount the one that needs a committee's patience. Strive gets to keep counting coins in public, each purchase its own headline. Tether has to keep explaining a timeline federal investigators already wrote down. Bitcoin traded at $81,391 at 13:06 UTC on Oct. 20, near where it sat when both men posted8.
By the numbers
- Strive's bitcoin stack hit 36,818 BTC on Oct. 19, 2026, after the week's $100 million buy1.
- Strive paid an average of $81,734 a coin for last week's 1,223 BTC5.
- Bitcoin traded at $81,391 at 13:06 UTC on Oct. 20, 20268.
- Ten outlets covered Strive's purchase within a day of the announcement9.
- Senate investigators found Tether left 34 wallet addresses active for nine months after a seizure notice, moving $34.6 million in USDT3.
- Ardoino says Tether's freezes cut Iran-linked stablecoin volumes by 94 percent since 20234.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is targeting roughly $1 billion in Iran-linked crypto assets for seizure4.
What to watch
Watch whether Strive's SATS preferred shares settle on schedule Tuesday, the same test Cipolaro flagged for each bitcoin treasury firm's funding. Chainalysis or Treasury data could still narrow the four-week gap Ardoino claims for Tether's freezes. A new OFAC designation naming any of the 34 wallets would confirm the Senate's timeline. Strive's next purchase disclosure will show whether the pace Cole set last week holds.
