Tether's Bitcoin Count Outruns Its Own Audit

Tether's chief says the company holds 150,000 Bitcoin; its own audit counts a third fewer, while Sky's USDS shows every coin live.

“Tether's chief executive told a stage in Lugano the company holds 150,000 Bitcoin, worth $11.5 billion. Its own audit counts a third fewer coins. Does a stablecoin's crypto backing count only when someone checks it?”

Paolo Ardoino stood on a stage in Lugano, Switzerland, on Nov. 3, 2026. Tether's chief executive told the Plan ₿ Forum the company holds about 150,000 Bitcoin. He priced that stack at $11.5 billion, with Bitcoin near $77,204 a coin. "We have give or take 150,000 bitcoin ourselves," Ardoino said. "It's not much, but it's honest work"1.

Read fast, the number says Tether's crypto conviction keeps growing. A bigger Bitcoin stack reads as strength, proof the company can absorb a shock. Tether's own math cuts against that story. Its Sept. 30 attestation lists 100,060 Bitcoin toward its reserves, worth $8.37 billion then. That is a third fewer coins than Ardoino claimed in Lugano2.

BDO Italia checked those books. BDO's attestation covers the Bitcoin inside Tether's reserves, valued at $83,621 a coin on Sept. 30. The attestation says little about Ardoino's other 49,940 coins, which sit in a place only Tether can see2.

Ardoino framed the quarter as proof of discipline days earlier. “Our responsibility is to make sure USD₮ remains dependable when people need it most, including when markets and financial systems come under pressure,” he said in Tether's own Oct. 30 release2.

Crypto-backed stablecoins run on a different promise. Sky Protocol, the project once called MakerDAO, mints USDS and DAI against crypto locked in public vaults. Rune Christensen co-founded Sky and now directs its Frontier Foundation.

Christensen watched Galaxy Digital add $100 million of Sky's savings token, sUSDS, to its own corporate balance sheet on Sept. 233. Galaxy also approved sUSDS as collateral across a lending business that carries a $1.4 billion loan book. Christensen called the move proof of design. “Galaxy putting sUSDS on its corporate balance sheet and as collateral across its lending business shows what happens when a protocol operates with transparent, rules-based financial discipline,” Christensen said.

Sky's net revenue rose 11.8 percent to $37.19 million in the third quarter of 2026, up from $33.27 million in the second3.

Every dollar behind that revenue sits on a ledger a stranger can open today, at info.sky.money. Tether's extra 49,940 Bitcoin sit in a place only its own chief executive named, from a stage, once.

Crypto-backed vaults carry their own danger, and Sky's own critics name it plainly. Abdul Rafay Gadit co-founded Zigfinance and serves as its chief commercial officer. He studies the lending vaults crypto-backed stablecoins depend on4. That market passed $10 billion in tracked assets this October, up from roughly $4 billion in early 2025. “A vault share can be borrowed against elsewhere, creating another layer of leverage on the same underlying assets,” Gadit said.

Gadit's warning holds its weight. A vault can stack leverage the same way a bank can. The difference sits in who can watch it happen. Sky's dashboard shows every added layer the moment it lands, before a forced sale ever starts. Tether's second pool of Bitcoin surfaced only when its own chief executive mentioned it out loud.

Outside rating desks score that same gap. Ripple's dollar stablecoin, RLUSD, carries a Moody's A2 grade, the mark that lets a pension fund hold it under its own rules5. Tether's quarterly attestation stands on BDO's word alone.

A market that runs on code still owes an answer: who pays, who profits, and who carries the risk? Tether's dollar holders pay first if the firm's outside bets ever sour. Today they see only the figure its chief executive chooses to share. Sky's vault users pay first if a crypto crash forces a chain of sales, and they can watch that chain form in real time.

Galaxy Digital profits from Sky's transparency by lending against it. Ardoino profits from Tether's silence, since a bigger Bitcoin count reads as strength even when an auditor can place only part of it. Who owns the machine, and who gets to check its math?

Tether's chief built a reputation on round numbers given from a stage. His own auditor confirmed a third fewer of them this quarter2. Sky's crypto-backed design runs the opposite habit: a ledger that confirms its own number before a reporter has to ask.
